A dream in white - 1964 Ford Thunderbird on Bilweb Auctions first autumn listing
One of the finest Ford Thunderbirds in Sweden is one of the highlights on September auction #2 2022. It is a dream in the color of innocence, from inside and out. Maybe it was because the first owner in Phoenix, Arizona, was a doctor that he went all-in on white when he bought the car in 1964: exterior in Wimbledon White with white inlays in the side trim and an interior in white vinyl. In combination with, among other things, Kelsey Haynes spoke wheels, only 450 Thunderbirds with that specification was built this year.
”Doctor White” looked after his Thunderbird like a patient and after coming to Sweden in 2009, it is still in an exceptional condition.
1964 was the first year of the fourth generation Ford Thunderbirds. The first years, 1955-57, it was a sporty two-seater, but for 1958 it had grown considerably. Ford was convinced that four-seaters had a much better selling potential. ”Baby bird” became ”Square bird”.
The ´64 T-bird had a sensational design when it was presented and it was the rear that made the biggest impression on the press and customers. The two oblong taillights, surrounded by protective chrome frames and with ”Thunderbirds” on the glass, were among the biggest ever seen on an American car.
The front end was defined by the quad headlamps, moved to the extreme end of the fenders, emphasizing the broad and low stance.
But it is the interior that makes the biggest impression: a luxurious lounge in white and chrome, with four separate bucket seats. The dashboard with its excess of details is clearly influence by the aviation industry. Especially the levers for ventilation and windscreen vipers looks like the come directly from a cockpit. The turquoise light from the instruments creates a very special atmosphere inside the car.
Under the hood, however, it is gold that catches the eye. Both the valve covers and the air filter housing on the 390 engine is painted in the striking color, supplemented by the correct stickers. For those who appreciates an engine bay in original condition, all the markings with ”OK Final Test” are still in place. A 3-speed ”Cruise-O-Matic” gearbox transfers the 304 horsepower to the rear wheels.
This symbol for the early Sixties in America, when optimism was at its peak.
To the auction
An Audi Quattro in a condition that would make any car enthusiast jealous
As a 17-year-old, the current owner decided that he would acquire an Audi Quattro before his 25th birthday. He managed it by a half year's margin. He bought the car in Stockholm in June 1991, when it had only driven 60,000 km. This Audi is one of ten Quattros sold in Sweden in 1986 and it was sold new in Alingsås. The owner used the Audi as a utility car for the first few years, but soon realized that there was value in this car and put it in the garage. Liquide Luster wax and an absolute winter ban was applied to the car from that day on. Today the car has driven approx. 85,000 km.
Probably one of the finest T8 Saabs available
All T8s came in a dark grey metallic called Odoardo Grey with oxblood red leather upholstery. This car was first delivered to Gävle in 1990 and then ended up in 2006 with the current owner. In the last ten years, it has not driven more than 1000 km and has only driven a total of about 6000 km since 1995. Stored in a warm garage and exemplary maintenance over the years. Newly inspected without remarks.
