Buick Centurion Convertible – Back to the ’70s

Dreaming of owning a 1973 Buick Centurion Convertible? No? You should be.

Buick Centurion Convertible – Back to the ’70s

A 5.7-meter-long slice of the American dream from the final year before the oil crisis and new safety regulations effectively killed off the full-size car market. General Motors could still shamelessly build these rolling land yachts as if there were no tomorrow.

And it’s not exactly common, either. The Centurion was produced for only three model years, from 1971 to 1973, making it one of the shortest-lived Buick models ever built.

Our auction car rolled out of the Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City wearing the period-correct Sunburst Yellow paint. Its American history is not fully documented, but it arrived in Sweden in 2017 and has been cared for by the same family since 2018. Today, it remains in enjoyable driver-condition, and the massive 7.5-liter 455 V8 rumbles with reassuring authority.

Like so many other American cars of this era, the Buick is equipped with an 8-track player, adding even more to the period atmosphere. Introduced in the mid-1960s, this audio format deserves an article of its own, and the large cartridges still have a devoted following around the world. We can only speculate about which albums were spinning in this Centurion when it was new in the summer of 1973, but Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road would be a safe bet.

The Buick Centurion may have lacked the prestige in the United States to attract many celebrity buyers, but it did make its way into royal circles: the colorful Prince Henrik of Denmark, husband of Queen Margrethe II, proudly drove a 1973 Centurion Convertible.

So why not follow the example of Danish royalty? Travel back to the early 1970s in a full-size Buick—you deserve it.
