”The Racing of Gentlemen” - usually just called TROG - is about racing cars with pre-1934 bodies on a beach in Wildwood, New Jersey. Beach racing was one of the original ways to to race when racing tracks wasn’t available.
In Toreboda, Sweden, experienced car builder Johan Karlsson became so inspired by the film clippings from TROG the he felt compelled to build something himself. The result was the vintage ensemble that now is for sale on Bilweb Auctions.
The most striking is the ”Cigar racing car”, build from the ground around a 1927 Chevrolet engine where the absence of a rocker cover gives full insight in the movement of the valves. Twin Carter carbs piles up just behind the drivers head.
The body is done in Hessian cloth, wrapped around thin metal ribs and then coated with polyuretan. More the 700 rivets, applied by hand, completes the work.
The result is a handmade piece of art with a unique expression, probably unprecedented in the Old School hot rod community. The Cigar is fully drivable and has been driven on a beach in Denmark, reaching over 80 km/h.
Since the racer isn’t street legal, a tow car is needed. Again we end up in 1927 and a Chevrolet Capitol Coach, the best selling model from the Detroit company this year.
The engine and driveline are original and the whole car consists of carefully designed details that comes together to an almost arty entirety. The majority of authentic details has been kept and supplemented with a discreet patination.
This tow car is fully street legal.
Racing car, tow car - and of course a purpose built trailer. Again a distinct piece of handcraft with a rear axle from a 1937 Chevrolet, a practical manual winch and a wooden bay that adds a touch of vintage charm. The trailer, however, is not registered for road use.
This trinity is almost impossible to describe in a short text. A detailed study of all the pictures on Bilweb Auctions’ homepage is needed in order to comprehend what it is about. Why don’t Google ”The Race of Gentlemen” to get in to the mood!
This Chevrolet vintage triple is valued at between 250 000 and 280 000 SEK. The auction closes on 28 September.
