Freedom for sale at Bilweb Auctions: three iconic Volkswagen buses from the Sixties and Seventies

There are few vehicles that symbolizes the concept of ”freedom” as much as the Volkswagen bus. Now there are three of these freedom symbols for sale at Bilweb Auctions, one of them extremely rare - a 23-window Samba microbus from 1963.

The VW bus might be the most liked vehicle in the world - all categories. Loved for its often unassuming appearance, its versatility and for its promises: eternal youth and boundless adventures.
Therefore it doesn’t come as a surprise that the VW bus generates fanatic communities of fans all over the world and meetings that gathers thousands of vehicles.

The oldest of the three buses on Bilweb Auction’s new listing is from 1963. It is a 23-window ”Kleinbus”, or ”Samba” as it was called in the USA, the biggest market for the model. The 23-window ”Samba” is extremely rare. The VW aficionado doesn’t have to count the windows, he or she directly spots the two curved rear windows that connects the sides with the rear of the car. A huge canvas sunroof accentuates the feeling of light and space inside the cabin.

The auction car is very well presented, restored in the early 2010s and driven only 440 kilometers after completion. It is mildly customized with lower springs, rear lights from a Fifties model and the rear registration plate moved down to the bumper. The original engined has been replaced with a more powerful unit producing 44 horse power with the help of twin Webers.

It is a right hand drive - not unusual in the left-hand traffic of Sweden in the 1969s - and equipped with the sought-after ”jailbars” that protects the five rear windows from the luggage.

This unique 23-window VW Samba is valued by Bilweb Auction at between 750 000 and 800 000 SEK.

Another Sixties VW bus in the auction is a 21-window 1966 example, in other words without the two side/rear windows. Also this one has been customized with a light hand, mainly with lower springs, newer wheels, a carefully patinated paint and two specially made roof racks that gives the bus an unique look.

This 1966 VW bus was sold new in Sweden and is now valued at between 350 000 and 390 000 SEK.

Car number three is from the first year of the 1970s and thus a T2 - a second generation VW bus, a ”Bay Window” with a one piece windshield.

It got a repaint in its original color back in 1994, which was supplemented with a very tasteful triple green side decor two years ago, Westfalia style. At that time a new camping interior was mounted that, together with a foldable rear seat in periodical green checkered cloth, accentuates the Seventies feeling.

This icon is in a very good unrestored condition and is valued at between 190 000 and 220 000 SEK.
