It has been waiting over 30 years to get back out on the road again. 53 000 kilometers on the clock, original paint, untouched and in an unusual Sepia Brown color. A Porsche 911 T Targa in original condition that many thought existed only in the fantasy.
As no other classic car, the Porsche 911 has kept its hold over the enthusiasts. The prices have been climbing upwards for decades without interruption. Maybe because it is profoundly different from most other cars: the rear mounted engine, the feeling of precision and the base design rooted in the Sixties.
Late 1973, a gentleman drove back to his home in Lidkoping, Sweden, with his brand new 911 T Targa of the previous model year, even though model year 194 should have arrived. Maybe it was exactly a ´73 he wanted, the last model year with the slim och more elegant bumpers. He was an experienced Porsche driver, owning several 356 before, and driving them on the race track.
”Sepiabraun” was a color characteristic for Porsches of the early Seventies, like orange, lilac and light green. The wheels was the new” cookie cutter” type that arrived to the market in 1972 and seats were clad in leather and ”houndstooth” cloth, very typical of the time.
The Targa design - named after the famous car race Targa Florio in Sicily - had been on the market since 1967. Porsche anticipated that US road safety authorities would ban fully open convertibles and therefore designed a built-in roll bar.
The Porsche 911 T was the base model at the time with 130 horsepower and Solex carburetors, contrary to the 911 E and 911 S with mechanical fuel injection and 165 and 190 horsepower respectively.
Our Porsche enthusiast from Lidkoping drove very sparingly with his 911. ”It is enough to know that it sits there in the garage” he said when the family wondered if it wasn’t time to sell. In 2009 it had run 52 000 kilometers when passing the Swedish MOT test and since then just around 1000 kilometers has been added.
30 years later the 911 is now up for bidding at Bilweb Auctions - a very unlikely Porsche. The untouched original condition makes the Seventies very present when getting into it.
- This is a car that raises interest among Porsche enthusiasts all over Europe. I wouldn’t be surprised if we will see a very high final bid, says Michael Luft at Bilweb Auctions.
The markets value is estimated to between 1 and 1,2 million SEK. The auction ends on 30 June.
