A Porsche 911 with four cylinders - that’s a 912! Bilweb Auctions can now offer a very original 912 from 1966, the first model year, in it’s upcoming auction.
When prices on early Porsche 911´s has gone through the roof, an increasing number of enthusiasts considers a 912. It is essentially identical with its 6-cylinder sibling and the 1.6 litre flat four with 90 horse power is a very pleasant and reliable companion.
The 912 was Porsches strategy for keeping its 356 customers, since the new 911 was significantly more expensive. Therefore it was decided to introduce an entry level model that could continue to use the engine from the 356. And the success was a fact.
The motoring press at the time praised the 912 for its perfect balance, great road holding and low fuel consumption, making the 912 outsell the more powerful alternative.
The auction car is a model year 1966, the first year of production, making it the rarest of the surviving 912s. And it has a number of details that makes it stand out from the rest:
- a five-dial dashboard - an option at the time. Standard was three.
- five-speed gearbox instead of the standard four.
- Painted in the original color Aga Blue, a metallic that Porsche used for only three years, 1966-68.
Original steel wheels in another attractive detail that more and more people prefer instead of the aluminium ones. And they are painted in the correct silver tone - the 911 had chrome wheels.
The car underwent a restoration in the 1980s and in 2006 the engine was rebuilt. Since then it has covered only approximately 1000 km.
The time when a Porsche 912 was look upon over the shoulder due to its smaller engine has passed. Today it is a worthy representative for one of the world’s most sought after classic cars.
Bilweb Auctions has estimated the value to between 450 000 and 500 000 SEK.
The auction closes on 22 June.
