Back to the Nineties in a new Volvo 940

OK, it is not completely new, the odometer tells us 9030 kilometers, but the condition is as it never left the show room. This extremely low milage Volvo 940 from 1998 stands out on Bilweb Auctions premiere auction for 2022.

Back to the Nineties in a new Volvo 940

OK, it is not completely new, the odometer tells us 9030 kilometers, but the condition is as it never left the show room. This extremely low milage Volvo 940 from 1998 stands out on Bilweb Auctions premiere auction for 2022.

1998 was the last model year for Volvo 940 and thereby also the last rear wheel drive Volvo, indicated by the ”Classic” badge on the trunk lid. This Volvo 940 sedan in Passion Red was sold early in 1998 in Skåne, Sweden, and the sticker from the dealership is still on the rear window.
It was only driven 7190 kilometers during its first 15 years, but nevertheless got a thorough underbody coating. The very careful owner also decided to use seat covers. These came off just recently, revealing upholstery in condition as new.

A unique Volvo 940
Today the odometer reads 9030 kilometers, making this car one of the least driven Volvo 940s in the world. Those who appreciates small details telling about absolute original condition will be satisfied: the original Volvo cassette player, Pholus wheels with Michelin Pilots that never have been changed, the as-new periodical registration plates and a tool kit that seems to never have been opened.

- Modern classics, also known as Youngtimers, is one of the most distinct trends in the classic car scene since a number of years. This 940 is an excellent example of such a Youngtimer and the combination of as-new condition and low mileage will most probably attract a lot of people, says Hans Hedberg, head of Volvo Cars Heritage.

Under the hood resides the well-proven 2,3 liter light pressure turbo engine that became the favorite for most 940 buyers. The robust unit produced 135 horsepower that was the last ”red block engine” from Volvo Cars´ engine factory in Skövde. The nickname relates to the color of the engine block, a feature that can be traced back to the Sixties.

The Volvo 940 was introduced in 1991 as a well needed upgrade of the faithful 740, the design work supervised by the legendary Jan Wilsgaard, head of design. A new, more rounded, rear, the front from the 760 and a newly developed instrument cluster to satisfy the many Volvo customers that did not want a front wheel drive car. And Volvo wouldn’t have been Volvo without new safety features: safety belt pre-tensioners for the front seats, three-point safety belts on all three seats in the rear and an optional airbag in the steering wheel.

Many expected that the Volvo 940 would suffer heavily from the in-house competition from the new front wheel drive 850, arriving one year later. They were proven wrong. The Volvo 940 became a much-loved Volvo model during its 7 year lifespan and close to 248 000 cars were produced in the Torslanda factory in Gothenburg.

Bilweb Auctions has estimated the value of the auction car to between 120 and 140 000 SEK.
