Original condition. Original zustand. État original. No body rust ever. Factory paint. 65 000 km on the clock. We are talking about a 1966 Saab 96 Monte Carlo, up for sale at Bilweb Auctions.
As you probably know, there are a variety of preferences within the classic car hobby. Some are looking for meticulously restored cars with every detail in as-new condition. Others prefers them untouched, as they were when they left the assembly line, even if that means some wear and tear. It is the latter that this Saab Monte Carlo satisfies - to a high extent.
The first owner used the car sparingly during a couple of years and then stored it in a dry and well ventilated garage. It wasn’t until 2008 the Monte Carlo was back on the road when a new owner gently woke it up after a basic service. Nothing more was needed, except some polishing of the paint and chrome. Rust was inexistent and the original paint in a very good condition. A few minor dents from the Sixties was to be found, but the new owner decided not to do anything about them.
Since then the 3-cylinder two-stroke with its three Solex carburetors has been overhauled by an experienced Saab mechanic and only approximately 1000 kilometers has been added to the odometer.
Interior wise the classic Saab Sport/Monte Carlo wooden steering wheel is in place, as well as ”luxurious” details as the passenger head rest, the clock, the speedometer and the frugal rear seat, unique for the Saab Monte.
Monte Carlo has a special place in Saab’s history. The district in the Principality of Monaco is for ever associated with Erik ”On the roof” Carlsson´s two wins in the prestigious rally, in 1962 and 1963. And as we all know, he drove a Saab Sport, a few years later renamed Monte Carlo.
The auction of this Swedish classic is ongoing and will close on 22 June. The car is valued by Bilweb Auctions to between 280 000 and 340 000 SEK.
