The Karmann Ghia That Became a Faithful Companion for Life

Sara Granklint was just 25 when she bought her Karmann Ghia in 1966. She has remained faithful to it ever since—and it to her.
Now, however, they are set to part ways after 60 years.

It was a Type 34 that Sara fell for in 1966. This is the model most people do NOT picture when they hear the name Karmann Ghia: the slightly larger version with sharper lines, nicknamed the “Razor Edge” and built on the Type 3 chassis.

At the time, Sara was a teacher in Småland, and one of her pupils was a boy named Bo Andersson. As an adult, he became better known as Bosse Bildoktorn—“Bosse the Car Doctor”. Could his young teacher’s sports car have made a lasting impression on him?

Sara later became both a lawyer and a church organist, but her Karmann Ghia stayed with her through all of life’s changes. Today, it is still in good running order and was driven to classic car gatherings as recently as this summer. The driver’s seat, however, is badly worn and needs either a smart car blanket to hide the wear or new upholstery. The carpets have also seen better days.

Sara’s lifelong companion is now being sold through Bilweb Auctions, with an estimated value of SEK 150,000–170,000. The auction closes on 4 November.
