"A rarer sporty Volkswagen with the same kind of sporting character as its softer-shaped Karmann Ghia sibling, the Type 14; they look fast and would gladly take more power to match their sleek and sharp exterior."

Description

It was delivered new to its current owner in the fall of 1966, even though the registers say otherwise. The owner has thus used her car for 60 years, most recently this past summer at a few classic car meets. She has been active in Götaströms Fordonshistoriska Klubb for many years and has driven her Karmann Ghia regularly. After all these years, age is taking its toll, and she finds it difficult to get up out of the low-slung car. The odometer currently reads 36,100 km, and whether that means 136,100 km or 236,100 km is hard to determine, but it is most likely 136,100, even though the left seat is very worn. The last and final passed inspection was carried out on 2017-06-12.

Trivia: The owner holds a cantor's degree, plays her grand piano every day, and is a trained lawyer and teacher. And in her first math lessons as a young, newly qualified teacher, an even younger pupil sat in her class: one Bo Andersson, later known as Bosse Bildoktorn.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Starts easily once fuel reaches the carburetor, and the automatic choke works fine. After a longer period of standing, it can take a little more time, as with many of its stablemates, when the fuel has drained back. The brakes pull straight, the chassis feels good, and the gearbox and clutch have that familiar Volkswagen feel.

  • Interior condition

The interior shows use, with wear mainly on the driver's seat. The carpets are worn or missing. Good headliner and door panels, apart from a torn handle on the left door. New upholstery and carpets would be needed for a more comfortable feel, but car blankets and aftermarket floor mats will also go a long way. 1 key; the ignition lock is worn/broken – the car is started with a starter button once the key has been coaxed into the ignition position.

  • Exterior condition

Repainted and presentable, some paint on the rubber trim. Good chrome and glass. Weld repairs to the body and floor pan at some point. Older Sawa tires up front, somewhat newer Hankook at the rear. Size 165SR15, but they still rub slightly at the front at full steering lock.

  • General condition

Used and somewhat worn in places, but in fine mechanical working order. A thorough reconditioning, perhaps primarily of the trunk and engine compartment, would do it good. Otherwise a user-friendly and uncommon model.

Facts about the model

In March 1962, Karmann began building a slightly larger, US-inspired Ghia coupe that did not resemble the original. However, it was never sold new in the USA. It was based on the Type 3 chassis and had considerably sharper lines, hence the nickname Razor Edge. In 1962 and 1963 it was called the VW Ghia 1500, and between 1963 and 1965 the 1500S. From 1965 to 1969, the designation was 1600L. The model became considerably more expensive and more exclusive than the first Karmann-Ghia model, the Type 14, but was nevertheless built in 42,505 examples between 1962-1969 and only as a coupe, although a few special builds and prototypes were produced in convertible form.
