Two 2-stroke Saabs on auction – one tough Monte Carlo racer and a charmy 95A

A red Saab 96 Monte Carlo, and professionally built for the racing track. Meet one of the most exciting cars on Bilweb Auctions´s premiere auction 2022.

It´s model year 1966, tuned and rebuilt for international touring car racing in the historic class up to 1100 cc. It has a FIA Historical Technical Passport for racing worldwide. At the same time, it has a street legal registration in Sweden which is usual for these kind of racing cars. But great for its new owner.

The 3-cylinder, 841 cc, 2-stroke engine produced 42 hp in its original version, but here it´s tuned to close to 100 hp. A safety cage has been installed, passenger and rear seats removed and a Sparco racing seat mounted together with a four-point safety belt. A periodic steering wheel from Moto-Lita creates the right feeling for the driver and modified Regals wheels adds to the great looks.

-    It´s probably difficult to find a faster Saab that is approved for historic racing. It is extremely well built, says Peter Backstrom, director at Saab Car Museum in Trollhattan. In Europe, the 2-strokes from Saab is so intimately associated with rally and racing, so I expect a big interest for this car from enthusiasts outside of Sweden, Peter concludes.

Bidding starts February 3 and Bilweb Auctions estimates the value to between 250 000 and 300 000 SEK

An older brother to the Saab racer is the Saab 92A De Luxe from 1951. An early Saab with irresistible charm. It has belonged to the same family for 70 years and undertook a careful restoration 30 years ago, including new repaint as close to the original Bottle Green as possible. This color was the only one available from Saab during the first years of car manufacturing (the company had to get rid of its huge quantities of paint from the airplane production during WWII).

Since the car never has been driven during winters, and been stored well, no major rust repairs were needed during the restoration. The original interior upholstery is still in place and without any tear or stains, thanks to seat covers during the cars´ first 40 years. This adds significantly to the authenticity of the car.

The tiny 2-cylinder, 2-stroke, 764 cc engine produces 25 hp and is unrestored, since the car received a replacement engine just before it was stored.

The extreme aerodynamics of the early Saabs created a unique styling, and they can never be mistaken for any other car. The simplicity, with the absence of a rear tailgate as one example, and places them among the most exiting representatives for Swedish car industry ever.

Bilweb Auctions estimates the value of the Saab 92 to between 120 000 and 150 000 SEK.
