Gislaved, spring 1963: 68-year-old company director Thure Mårtenson takes delivery of his new Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III. He has a small silver plaque bearing his name fitted to one of the door sills.
In the small industrial town in Småland, with just over 6,000 inhabitants, this Rolls-Royce must have attracted almost as much attention as something from outer space.
Then again, Director Mårtenson, who had founded Svenska Celluoidindustri AB back in the 1920s, was well known for his passion for cars. During the 1940s and 1950s, he competed extensively in motorsport, among other cars driving an Alfa Romeo 6C 2500.
A left-hand-drive Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud sold new in Sweden was unusual even in 1962, and naturally remains so today. The vast majority of the approximately 2,000 Silver Cloud III cars produced were sold either in their right-hand-drive home market or in the United States.
Director Mårtenson is no longer with us, but his Rolls-Royce certainly is — and it is now being offered for sale by Bilweb Auctions. The current owner purchased the car in 2015 and is the 11th registered owner.
The same company in Ulricehamn that sold him the car has also assisted with servicing and maintenance over the years. The automatic transmission has been rebuilt, the wood interior trim has been restored, and new tyres and a new fuel pump have been fitted.
Overall, the car remains in very fine condition and is ready to continue being enjoyed.
In recent years, this Silver Cloud has primarily been used for attending events with the Swedish Rolls-Royce Club, and the indicated mileage of 84,000 kilometres is believed to be correct. Due to his age, the owner now feels the time has come for his pride and joy to continue its life with a new enthusiast.
It combines British and Småland motoring history and represents a magnificent example of a car that, in the 1960s, few other manufacturers could hope to rival.
Bilweb Auctions estimates the market value at between SEK 500,000 and SEK 550,000. The auction ends on 9 September.
