Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III 6,2 V8 — 1963

Originally sold new in Sweden and left-hand drive, this is one of the most elegant post-war Rolls-Royces and represents the final evolution of the Silver Cloud. Powered by its wonderfully smooth 6.2-litre V8 and presented in well-kept condition, it is a fine example of this iconic British luxury motor car.

"Owned by a Rolls-Royce enthusiast for over ten years, the current owner spent years searching for the right example. The car runs and drives nicely and has been carefully looked after throughout his ownership, both inside and out."

Description

First registered in Sweden on 12 April 1963, the car has had 11 registered owners. The first owner is believed to have been Mr Mårtenson from Gislaved, whose name tag can still be found on the door pillar.

The current owner purchased the car in 2015 from a specialist dealer in Ulricehamn selling Rolls-Royce and other British classics. The same dealer has also helped the owner over the years with servicing and maintenance.

Finding a left-hand-drive Silver Cloud III is not easy, and finding one originally sold new in Sweden is rarer still, as most were sold in the UK and many in the USA. Today, there are only around 15 examples registered in Sweden.

The current mileage reads 84,617 km. We do not have any documentation to verify the mileage, but one good point is that the engine runs very well and quietly, with none of the lifter ticking that can often be found on higher-mileage cars. The older history is not present, but the car does come with its handbook, wiring diagram, and lubrication and maintenance manual.

The car has been partly repainted at some stage and still presents well today, although the paint has a slightly matt finish in places and would probably benefit from a good polish.

Over the past ten years, the automatic gearbox has been renovated, the wooden trim refurbished, new tyres fitted, and more recently a new fuel pump has been installed. The car has always been kept in good running condition. The interior is in wonderful condition, and the bodywork is solid with no significant rust issues. The underside is also solid with no notable rust problems.

Launched in 1962, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III, together with its Bentley S3 equivalent, used the previous model's 6.2-litre V8, but with larger carburettors, a new distributor and higher compression ratio. A four-speed automatic transmission was standard. The most obvious changes were the new four-headlamp front, removal of the sidelights from the wing tops and a slightly lower radiator shell. Inside, separate front seats and increased rear passenger space improved the comfort even further.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The car starts easily, with a smooth and stable-running engine and no strange noises. The engine bay is super clean and tidy and looks to have been very well maintained. The gearbox shifts properly and the brakes are super sharp.

The car has always been kept in good running condition and has been driven to a few local Rolls-Royce meetings each year. It is inspection exempt and ready for its next owner to enjoy. The wheels present nicely, with good chrome hubcaps and a good set of tyres.

  • Interior condition

The interior is in wonderful condition, with nice blue leather seats that remain soft and show no notable damage. This also extends to the leather door cards and interior panels.

The wooden trim throughout is in great condition, with a lovely high-gloss finish, including the fold-down rear picnic tables and slide-out tray beneath the dashboard, complemented by sparkling chrome details. The dashboard is equally impressive, with nice original gauges and clean, clear instrumentation. The electric windows all work, while the headliner and carpets are also in excellent condition throughout.

The boot space is super clean, complete with the original toolkit, and the surrounding bodywork is solid with no notable rust issues.

  • Exterior condition

This is a very presentable car throughout, with good-fitting body panels and no significant rust issues. The underbody is very clean and solid, with no notable rust problems. Paintwork is clean overall but slightly matt in areas where the car has been repainted, mainly around the rear end and bonnet. Ideally, a good polish would improve the finish. The chrome work throughout is bright and shiny, and the car is also fitted with tinted windows.

There is a small paint touch-up on the rear wing edge, a small paint crack on the upper rear wing and a small blister on the front wing — see pictures.

  • General condition

These are wonderfully designed cars and true icons of Rolls-Royce craftsmanship, combining elegance, quality and hand-built luxury. This is a car that is ready to be enjoyed directly by its next owner and hopefully cherished for many more years to come.

Please also take the time to read the current owner’s heartfelt comments below, which tell the story of what this special car has meant to him and his wife.

Owner's comment

A Little Background on My 1962 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III Ever since I was very young, I had dreamed of one day owning a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III. To me, it was the ultimate motor car — not simply a car you get into, but one you almost feel you “step up into.” Naturally, I had looked through both Swedish and international magazines over the years, but found it difficult to find a truly well-cared-for example, one that had genuinely been cherished by its owner — or perhaps his chauffeur. I looked at Rolls-Royces in England, elsewhere in Europe and also in the United States. I soon came to the conclusion that many of the Silver Cloud IIIs coming from America had not been maintained to the standard I wanted for “my” car. In Sweden during the 1960s, there were very few Rolls-Royces, and even fewer Silver Cloud IIIs. I had almost given up hope of finding one in Sweden, let alone a genuinely well-preserved example. Fate Had Other Plans Sometimes you also need a little luck — and I was fortunate. Through contacts in the motor trade, I learned that a Swedish-delivered, left-hand-drive Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III was being offered for sale from a deceased estate. Swedish-delivered and left-hand drive — did such a car even exist? Even more remarkably, I was told that the car had covered only 80,000 kilometres. It sounded almost too good to be true, but after visiting the car, seeing it for myself and driving it, I was convinced. This was one of those opportunities that simply could not be missed, so I bought the car there and then — a decision I have never regretted. My wife and I have enjoyed many wonderful occasions with the car, particularly at various meetings of the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club, where we have also made many good friends. But time passes, and we are no longer as young as we once were. My wife and I have therefore decided that we would like to give another enthusiast the opportunity to experience the pleasure of owning this fantastic motor car, one in which we have created so many wonderful memories. Parting with it naturally brings a certain sadness. In many ways, it represents a chapter of our lives that will never return. It is rare to come across a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III of this quality, particularly one that is both left-hand drive and originally sold new in Sweden, with a Swedish history. With its low mileage and beautifully preserved condition, this is a very special car. We sincerely hope that its next owner will have the same affection and appreciation for the car that my wife and I have had, and will continue to enjoy this unique Rolls-Royce and create as many wonderful memories with it as we have.

Facts about the model

The Rolls Royce Silver Cloud was produced from 1955 to 1966 and largely shared its appearance with Bentley's S model. The Silver Cloud Series I featured a straight six-cylinder engine of 4887 cc, while Series II and III were equipped with a V8 engine of 6230 cc. The transmission was handled by a four-speed automatic. The body came in two standard lengths: the normal length at 538 cm, and the Long Wheel Base (LWB) at 549 cm.

In addition to four-door sedans in normal and LWB, chassis were provided to coachbuilding firms that created their own versions. These could include extended limousines, two-door coupé and convertible versions, or other unique designs. While such customizations were more the rule than the exception in earlier times, with the Silver Cloud model, there was less of this. However, out of the 7,451 units produced, there were still 556 chassis on which special versions were built.

When the Series 3 was introduced for the 1963 model year, the vehicles featured dual headlights.

The Silver Cloud model was eventually replaced by the Rolls Royce Silver Shadow.
