The Classic BMW Leaves the Family After 50 Years

After more than five decades within the same family, it is now time for a classic BMW 3.0 CSI to move on to a new owner. Since the mid-1970s, the well-preserved coupé has been cherished as an enthusiast’s car — and behind the wheel lies a story filled with memories, family traditions, and a genuine passion for motoring.

The story is told by radio personality and motoring journalist Hasse Andersson, well known from the popular program Fråga Bildoktorn on Swedish Radio P4. For 23 years, the show helped Swedish motorists with everything from technical issues to everyday concerns behind the wheel.

“We spoke to an incredible number of people over the years. There was a lot of Volvo talk, but sometimes we almost had to put the Volvo questions aside so we could discuss something else,” he says with a laugh.

The BMW was purchased as early as 1975 by Hasse’s father-in-law, when the car was only a year old. Since then, it has essentially never left the family. In 1983, Hasse’s wife received the car as a 25th birthday gift from her father — a gift that would remain part of the family for many years to come. Today, the couple has owned the car for more than 40 years.

“It has stayed in the family the entire time, and we have truly used it as an enthusiast car,” Hasse explains.

Despite approaching half a century in age, the car has held up remarkably well over the years. A few major restorations have been carried out, always with great care and a focus on preserving the car’s character. One important repair was made shortly after the family took ownership, when the engine suffered from overheating. The cylinder head was replaced with a more modern version from the 1983 model year, improving both cooling and reliability. During the mid-1980s, the front fenders were also replaced and the car was repainted. The paint the car wears today is still the same finish applied in 1985.

“I’m actually surprised by how well it has held up through the years. It has been stored indoors the whole time, and that has naturally helped a lot.”

Parting with the car now brings mixed emotions. When asked whether he feels any separation anxiety, the answer comes immediately.

“Yes, absolutely.”

At the same time, he notes that the final decision belongs to his wife.

“She wants to sell the car, and so we are doing it.”

For the next owner, this is not only a classic BMW coupé with documented history, but also a car that for nearly 50 years has been a natural part of one family’s life and passion for driving.
