"The sought-after E9 in its finest road-going form, complete with Swedish history and three registered owners."

Description

Delivered new by Sigbjörnsson Bil AB in Gävle on April 1st, 1974 to Nordiska Ingenjörsbyrån in Örebro, presumably as some form of company car. Perhaps a sleek, sporty coupé—also one of the finest cars the Munich marque ever produced—was not quite the right fit for an engineering firm, as the car was purchased just a year later by the current owner’s father. She eventually received the BMW as a 25th birthday present, and by then she was already with Hasse P, an up-and-coming radio voice at Radio Jönköping as well as Swedish Radio P4 nationwide, alongside his longtime partner Bosse “Bildoktorn.” For many years, Hasse P and Bosse B helped listeners with car-related issues over the airwaves in an unmistakable Småland dialect with local variations—Bosse himself being from Landsbro outside Vetlanda. He later hosted a TV show for a couple of years, and today the two run a podcast together. Hasse has, fittingly, always been something of a caretaker of his wife’s fine 3.0 CSi, and it surely added an extra layer of credibility when discussing cars on the radio as an established presenter at Sveriges Radio. Now, however, the couple has decided to sell the coupé, and it is an attractive example in many respects. The odometer has turned over one time and the total mileage after transport to the storage location in Sandared is just over 153 700 km. The most recent approved inspection was carried out on June 14, 2022, and as of 2024 the car is exempt from further inspections.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Feels right in both engine and gearbox, running smoothly and delivering that characteristically beautiful straight-six sound—perhaps with a slightly sharper note than standard due to the stainless steel exhaust system. The engine type originally had a heat-sensitive cylinder head, and in 1984 the car received an updated, more modern top end. The brakes were refurbished in 2014, the fuel injection system received new injectors in 2019, and a new clutch master cylinder was installed in 2023. Routine service and maintenance have otherwise been handled by the owner’s brother, who runs a meticulous automotive workshop.

  • Interior condition

Plush, luxurious interior in invitingly fresh condition; the car received entirely new upholstery in 2005. The dashboard’s wood veneer is intact and attractive, with some minor lacquer or veneer lifting on the front section of the right door trim. After the initial photo session, the car has been fitted with new carpets in original specification—updated photos showing the carpets have been added. The headliner is in fine condition, complemented by the sunroof. The luggage compartment features undamaged, characteristic BMW trim, and the spare wheel well is properly rust-protected. The left rear power window operates only from the switch in the rear seat.

  • Exterior condition

It was fully repainted in its original color, Fjord Blue, in 1985 in conjunction with the replacement of the front fenders. Today, it presents well and remains highly attractive, with a few minor, typical signs of wear. The sunroof functions properly, with new seals, and also received a new lower panel during the bodywork carried out prior to repainting. Large sections of the floor and both sills were recently replaced using original sheet metal parts. Original 14-inch wheels fitted with good tires.

  • General condition

A fine, user-friendly and enjoyable example with a solid and well-documented history—plus a touch of car-enthusiast radio provenance.

Facts about the model

The E9 coupé has a rich motorsport heritage. Many enthusiasts will immediately think of the beautifully liveried factory race cars, of our own Ronnie Peterson’s successes with the model, and not least the Swedish Championship-winning cars run by Förenade Bil in the hands of Rune Tobiasson. As if the elegant design alone weren’t enough.

A car with such direct links to the racing version—known as the “Batmobile” with its wings and spoilers—is always appealing in any form, even for those less drawn to its competition pedigree. Today, the E9 is highly sought after in all guises, and while parts can be expensive, its appeal remains as strong as ever.
