You know what a “sleeper” is, right? A car whose performance is not revealed by its appearance.

Bilweb Auctions is now offering one of Sweden’s finest examples of the genre: a multiple award-winning V70, combining the practicality of a family car with the performance of a supercar.

This article only scratches the surface of what this car is all about. Otherwise, it would simply become too long. But in broad terms, the story goes like this:

Tobias Johansson from Linköping decided to build a true sleeper. He chose to base it on Sweden’s number-one family car: a second-generation Volvo V70, or a “phase two” as it is known among Volvo builders.

All the original mechanical components were removed. Tobias constructed a tubular chassis fitted with front and rear suspension from a BMW E60 M5—the model powered by a V10 producing just over 500 horsepower. The brakes also came from the same car.

For the engine, he chose a straight-six from a Toyota Supra: the legendary 2JZ, for those in the know. Naturally, it was rebuilt from the ground up, resulting in an output of 473 horsepower.

The red exterior colour was taken from the Dodge Viper, while much of the interior remains original Volvo.

What has been described here in just a few sentences took Tobias ten years to complete and, of course, hardly does the build justice.

However, when the finished car was presented at the Custom Motor Show in Jönköping in spring 2025, it received the recognition it deserved. Among other accolades, it won “Best in Show Performance” and “Best Paint”, and was selected as a finalist in Sweden’s Best-Looking Car competition. Not bad for a car that, to the uninitiated, could easily be mistaken for an ordinary V70.

It is registered as an amateur-built vehicle in accordance with SFRO regulations—but formally, it is no longer a Volvo V70. The registration certificate lists it as a Super 70 T6 RWD.

“What about the performance?” someone may ask. Here, we will quote Tobias himself: “Enough to tow the caravan across the Öland Bridge.”

This rolling proof that Sweden ranks among the world’s leading nations for custom car building has an estimated market value from Bilweb Auctions of between SEK 650,000 and SEK 850,000. The auction ends on 29 July.
