Riley RMC 1950 – Elegance from the Empire’s Final Days

It doesn’t get much more English than this: a 1950 Riley RMC cabriolet immediately evokes images of damp tweed, pipe smoke, and coal fires.

Yet when the model was launched in 1948, it was designed entirely for the American market. Of the total 507 cars produced, only a small number were right-hand drive – and one of those found its way to Sweden.

Nothing is known about the car’s first 20 years in this country, though the National Archives could no doubt shed some light. By 1971, however, it was in Gothenburg, where it was sold to the current owner’s father – meaning it has been in the same family for nearly 55 years. Trips to Spain, weddings, graduation celebrations, and drives home from the maternity ward – the Riley has truly been used and loved.

Today, it is in excellent condition and ready for new adventures.

It’s an impressive car, just over 4.7 meters long, and its long wheelbase gives it a distinctive appearance. Despite its size, it has only one row of seats, though three people can sit side by side. The luggage compartment in this cabriolet offers ample space for large amounts of baggage.

The big 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine delivers 100 horsepower and was claimed to reach a top speed of 160 km/h – remarkable performance at the turn of the 1940s and 1950s.

The low production numbers make the Riley RMC a very rare car, not only in Sweden but worldwide.

Its market value is estimated between 250,000 and 300,000 SEK. The auction ends on November 13.
