The Sixties was Volvo´s heydays in Motorsport. The most successful model was the PV 544 which, with Tom Trana behind the wheel, won the European Championship in 1964, after victories in the RAC, Acropolis and Swedish rallys.
The year after, in 1965, Joginder and Jaswant Singh won the Safari Rally in a PV that Trana had crashed the year before and left behind in Nairobi.
A true sensation in the rally world.
So there was a lot of inspiration for the young man that in September 1965 took delivery of a white PV 544 Sport from the local Volvo dealer in the small town of Ulricehamn, Sweden. He immediately turned into a rally car, with lots of the attributes that was a must for a competition PV at the time. A few examples:
- twin front shock absorbers
- skid plate
- reinforced rear suspension
- rev counter from Smiths
- Halda Speedpilot
- Marschal flood lights
- roof mounted search light
Up until 1968 the car participated in around 70 competitions, mostly rally but also ice racing and touring car racing. The car was then sold, but kept a place in the heart of the young man who later became I front figure in the Swedish PV club and one of Sweden’s foremost experts on the model.
25 years later he traced his old PV Sport, bought it back, and carried out a thorough restoration that brought it back to its Sixties rally style with the characteristic black body panels.
The car had a second career and was driven from 1999 until 2009 in a large number of historic races. Today it constitutes a time marker from the era when Volvo was in the top layer of international rally.
Bilweb Auctions has value the car to between 380 000 and 420 000 SEK. The auctions closes on 24 November.
