"It’s hard not to smile whether you’re driving it, riding along, or hearing it pass by in a powerslide under full throttle. As always with an older race car, there are things to look over, but that’s also part of the charm. And charming it is – deeply rooted in Swedish motoring culture, it screams Swedish automotive history as it goes by."

Description

This car was first registered for road use on January 1, 1970. The current owner acquired it in the 1980s, and in 1989 it was converted into a race car for Group H. Since then, it has had a long history as a competition car. Ten years ago, it was adapted to Appendix K. It has competed in the Midnight Sun Rally in 2009, 2022, and 2023. Over the years, the car has been updated, most recently in 2023 with new seats and harnesses, as well as an overhaul of the engine, carburetors, and rear axle. At that time, the current owner also bought the car back for the third time. Recently, the engine oil and filter were changed, new brake pads installed, and the brakes serviced. Today, it is fully functional and ready for new challenges. Included with the car is a set of gravel tires on ATS rims, a set of ice tires on ATS rims, as well as a load of useful spare parts. Also included are numerous photos from competitions over the years, along with the car logbook and documentation.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs lively in both engine and drivetrain. During a short test drive on country roads, everything felt solid and well-functioning such as steering, clutch, gearbox, handling, brakes, etc. Not inspected on a lift, but from what could be seen it looks good with both use and racing patina.

  • Interior condition:

Stripped for racing with newer seats and harnesses. All equipment for competition use and in good working order.

  • Exterior condition:

Robust and solid, with as many scars and just as honest as the tough guy Börje Salming. Plastic windows in doors, sides, and rear. ATS rims with good tires.

  • General condition:

A classic on the racetracks that is not yet ready for retirement. A car with both engine and racing history, well worth entering the realm of enthusiast vehicles.

Facts about the model

When Volvo launched the 140 model in the fall of 1966, as a 1967 model year, a new era began for the company from Hisingen. Previous cars from the Gothenburg manufacturer were inspired by American car fashion, and with the Amazon and P1800 they drew influences from Italy. Now came a strict and relatively angular design that could be said to reflect a modern Scandinavian expression. Already in June 1960, work began on project P660, which later received the designation 1400 and finally became the 140 model. Early in the process, Volvo had decided on two-, four-, and five-door versions. With Jan Wilsgaard leading the design team, they created a long-lasting and timeless design that endured from 1966 until 1993, when the 240 model was discontinued.
From the very beginning, Volvo showed that they were now taking the lead in safety development. When the model was introduced, it featured, among other things, a dual-circuit braking system, disc brakes on all wheels, a split collapsible steering column that in the event of a crash would break off instead of being pushed toward the driver. The windshield was of laminated type and elastic. Around the passengers was a “safety cage” of box beams and crumple zones in the front and rear. The doors had safety locks, the rear-view mirror was spring-loaded, and the seats cleverly designed to reduce injuries such as whiplash. Previously, various safety features, especially in the US, had been seen as a sign that a car was not safe enough, but now this perception changed worldwide, and Volvo took the lead when it came to safety thinking.
At first, it was the traditional B18 engine that did the job, but soon enough the B20 engine arrived. Over the years, there were various updates and special versions, ranging from the well-equipped GT versions to a five-door model with a raised roof called the Express for better load capacity, which then replaced the aging workhorse Volvo Duett. For the 1974 model year came the both praised and criticized heavy bumpers. This version, however, strengthened Volvo’s reputation as the world’s safest car. This configuration was produced for only nine months before production of the 240 model began in June 1974.
The 140 model was manufactured in Sweden, Belgium, Canada, Australia, Malaysia, and South Africa, so the epithet “world car” is fitting. More than 1.2 million units were produced between 1966 and 1974.
Being the robust car it is, the Volvo 140 also became a popular competition car in many different disciplines. Countless cars have been converted and are still being converted for various purposes, from rallycross, ice and circuit racing to classic rally competitions.
