Description

A particularly beautiful Volvo Amazon Sport with a known history, always driven in Norrland. In 1972, the car was purchased by Folke Johansson, who lived in Gammelstad, about 10 kilometers from Luleå. It remained in the family at the same address until 2006 when the current owner bought it. He was a neighbor of Folke and has closely followed the car since 1972. After acquiring it in 2006, he decided to fully restore the Amazon. (See the owner’s comment.) The engine, transmission, and overdrive were professionally rebuilt. The body was sanded down and repainted by a body shop. The original bumpers and the trunk handle were re-chromed. All interior components, including the headliner, door panels, and instrument padding down to the smallest trim, were replaced with newly manufactured parts, all sourced from the reputable VP Autoparts. The elusive original rubber mat was also obtained before production ceased.

The car was completed and road-ready by Midsummer 2009 and has since been used sparingly. The odometer reads 14,650 kilometers. The owner estimates that it has rolled over twice, which would mean a total of 214,650 kilometers.

The car comes with the original owner’s manual, two keys, a spare wheel, and a jack. This is a distance auction, meaning that the pictures and information about the car’s condition have been provided by the owner. BWA has not inspected the car on-site.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

B18 sport engine with an alternator, dual SU carburetors, and overdrive. The current owner has rebuilt the engine and installed a K-cam and stage 2 head from KG Tuning. In conjunction with this, a 123RV electronic ignition distributor has been fitted. The transmission and overdrive were refurbished at SVIS in Köping, and the carburetors were overhauled at SU-Specialisten in Vännäs.

The rear axle is a limited-slip differential with a 4:10 ratio, and it was renovated in the early 2000s. It has a 2-inch sports exhaust system and a renovated braking system, including a brake booster. The car is equipped with disc brakes in the front. The steering column was replaced in the 1970s with a newer model featuring a steering lock for added theft protection.

All technical aspects function properly. The only note from the owner is a dull resonance sound from the rear axle during engine braking, which goes quiet at steady throttle or acceleration. (See the owner’s comment.)

  • Interior condition:

The interior has been newly manufactured to match the original appearance. All rubber seals for the windows and door openings are new. The instrument panel features the 123GT model’s trim. A modern radio has been discreetly installed under the dashboard. There is a universal tachometer. The rubber mat in the trunk is worn.

  • Exterior condition:

The body was sanded down and repainted in 2009. The original bumpers have been re-chromed. It is equipped with 5.5-inch wheels with Nankang 185/65-15 tires. A new windshield was installed in 2009. The grille halves are of a later model; this model year should have the older style with a rib in the center of the grille.

  • General condition:

A stylish Volvo 122 Sport that appears to be genuinely restored. A car that we believe will bring joy to its owner for many years to come.

Owner's comment

In 2006, I had the chance to buy the neighboring family’s Volvo Amazon Sport. They had owned and used it since 1971. I still remember when my neighbor Folke rolled into the driveway with his newly purchased car in 1971. It was nearly 10 years old at that time, but news spread like wildfire through the neighborhood that Folke had bought an impressive Amazon Sport. All the neighborhood boys gathered to curiously look under the hood. Two carburetors! That felt like a big deal. Folke, being completely unsentimental, declared that they were going to be removed. “It uses too much fuel,” was his verdict. So he had a Zenit single carburetor installed instead. When I bought the car in 2006, I received a complete original intake with the dual carburetors, which had been unused for 34 years. I disassembled the car in 2006 and began the restoration, which was completed by Midsummer 2009. We honed the engine block, as there was virtually no wear in the cylinders. The head was upgraded to a stage 2 head from KG Tuning, ported, fitted with the largest valves, and converted to run on unleaded fuel. The transmission and overdrive were refurbished by SVIS in Köping (Swedish Volvo Clubs in collaboration). The previous owner had the rear axle renovated by a vocational school, but now, after many years, it has started to make noise during engine braking, and I believe it needs adjustment/shimming. The entire interior was new in 2009, all purchased from VP Autoparts. The only deviation was that I bought the instrument panel from a 123GT, as the standard trim was on backorder. The entire braking system was renovated in 2009, including the brake booster. The front brake calipers have been upgraded to those from a Volvo 240, which fit without any issues. The body was in good condition when I started the restoration, but I sanded it down for safety. The front crossmember mounts were also replaced at the same time. I also installed a new 2-inch exhaust system in 2009.

Facts about the model

Information from the Volvo Amazon Club regarding model years 1961 to 1963:

In 1961, Volvo introduced the new system of type designations. All B18 Amazons launched in August 1961 are classified as 1962 model year. It is also accurate to refer to them as model year 1961/62. This applies to the 1963 models as well, which are often registered as 1962 despite being from the 1963 model year, and can correctly be called model year 62/63.
