Description

This car was registered for traffic on October 31, 1967. The current owner acquired the car on November 1, 2014. He is a longtime Volvo enthusiast and was one of the founders of the Swedish Amazon Club. He also ran a business that rustproofed cars using linseed oil. This car became a close companion to his already well-known white Amazon. This vehicle has also received a substantial dose of personal updates with Volvo original parts and/or accessories.

In 2017, various parts such as the doors, hood, and trunk lid were removed, along with the windows. The car was then sanded down to bare metal and repainted in its original color following proper procedures. Most of the chrome trim around the windows and drip moldings are NOS, as are the rubber seals. The dark red original interior had faded and lost its luster, so it was replaced with an interior from a ’69 model in the rare beige color. Reupholstered comfort headrests in the same shade increase comfort. The steering wheel was also updated to a similar color with a leather-wrapped cover. The seats have Recaro reclining mechanisms. The radio cover is the rare 1957 version with the text “Amazon,” whereas in other model years it says “Volvo.”

Lighting is provided by SEV Marchal Grand Luxe with H4 bulbs. The auxiliary lights are Hella 140, mounted on a rare extra-light grille. At the rear, there’s a NOS reverse light typical of Police Amazons. Newly chromed “Amerikabågar” and bumpers with horns were added, along with new door mirrors in the original design from VP-Autoparts. In the engine bay, you’ll now find dual SU HS6 carburetors, just like in the 123 GT. There’s also 123 GT-type engine bay lighting and a new voltage regulator. The engine revs are reduced with an overdrive of type J, refurbished by SVIS. A new 2-inch Abarth-type exhaust system was installed. The wheels were sandblasted, painted silver-gray, and then given a layer of clear coat. The hubcaps and chrome trim rings are in the style of the 123 GT, and the wheels are fitted with new Galaxy tires. NOS 122S and Overdrive emblems are also featured.

Inside the car, you’ll find a Smith tachometer, 123 GT type, an electric clock, and a delightful period-correct NOS rear window fan. The radio and music player are a modern retro-style unit with four new retro speakers, while the original Volvo radio remains in the car, behind the new one. Volvo’s original hazard lights for the Amazon are also installed. The car has original rubber floor mats with textile mats on top, and over those are Volvo rubber floor protectors in original design. The odometer shows 68,218 km, likely having rolled over once. Various documents and paperwork accompany the car. It is inspected and road-ready.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs smoothly in both engine and drivetrain. It has a sharp throttle response, and the steering, clutch, shifting, overdrive, and brakes are all in good working order. During a test drive on the highway, the car felt tight, responsive, and pleasant to drive. It ran quietly and calmly without any wind noise, but when accelerating, it sounded just as a lively B18 with dual SUs and a 2-inch exhaust system should. Although it hasn’t been inspected on a lift, the car has been thoroughly rustproofed, and everything visible appeared to be in good condition.

  • Interior condition:

Comfortable and elegant beige interior (430-595) with a high-quality finish throughout, both in overall appearance and details. The seats and rear bench are firm, with well-maintained door panels and trim. There is minor wear on the vinyl in some areas. The headliner and carpets are in excellent condition. The steering wheel, controls, instruments, and dashboard are all in fine shape. Everything seems to function well. Additional gauges and other accessories are in great working order. A newer retro-style radio is installed, but the original Volvo radio from the early 1970s is included. Period-correct theft protection on the vent windows is also fitted.

  • Exterior condition:

The paintwork in Royal Blue (96) is glossy and smooth, with equally fine chrome, glass, trim, rubber, and lighting details. The emblems are in excellent condition. The wheels, chrome wheel trims, and tires are of the same high standard. Both the engine bay and trunk are in great shape.

  • General condition:

A beautiful and well-maintained, fully functional Amazon from the vibrant 1960s. Presented in a delightful color combination with plenty of original updates and accessories. This is a unique car, ready to hit the road with no hassle. A fine classic from the era of Sweden’s “folkhem.”

Facts about the model

There have been countless articles written about the Amazon, one of our most cherished classic cars. Designed by Jan Wilsgaard with Italian influences, it was Volvo’s answer to the so-called pontoon body style that became a hallmark of the 1950s. Produced from 1956 to 1970, with model years spanning from 1957 to 1970. In 1959, it became the world’s first mass-produced car to feature a three-point front seatbelt as standard.

The bulletproof B18 engine with 75 hp was introduced for the 1962 model year. For the 1965 model year, there were several changes, including a new grille, new seats and interior, as well as the so-called hole wheels and new hubcaps. In 1967, more upgrades were made, such as a closed cooling system, a modified clutch, a stronger rear suspension, and a new radiator grille. Most notably, 1967 was the year the 123 GT model was launched.

When the 1970s arrived, the Amazon was retired after 14 model years and 667,332 units produced. It came in two-, four-, or five-door versions, ranging from standard models to Sport and GT versions. A Swedish icon and a piece of automotive history.
