Description

The car was delivered to its first and current owner in June 1968 by Jöhnkes Bil AB in Åtvidaberg. It was driven under its own power (for some reason, there was no car transport available from the west coast) from Gothenburg to Linköping for further transport to Åtvidaberg, with 370 break-in km on the odometer at the time.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Well-serviced B18, meticulously maintained by a fastidious owner. No restoration over the years, but the camshaft was replaced under warranty when the car was new due to a hardening defect, according to Volvo. It has had a stainless steel exhaust system for several years. The carburetors protest a bit when the engine is cold, and during the test drive, it was running on old gasoline from last season—the car hasn’t been driven this year. After filming for a while, when the engine warmed up and after driving back and forth on small roads, the owner remarked, 'Are we stopping already? Now it’s starting to feel just right again.' Words from an owner who has driven his 1800S almost every season since its delivery in 1968.

  • Interior condition:

Nicely worn-in and soft leather interior, regularly conditioned and cleaned. Everything else is well-preserved: carpets, headliner, door panels, and the dashboard, including its top. Along the inside of the left A-pillar, there's a row of pins from a trip to the Soviet Union. A stash of Toy chewing gum packs served as icebreakers and were traded for badges and other unique souvenirs.

  • Exterior condition:

Repainted in the 1980s after a carburetor fire scorched the paint on the hood and part of a fender. The entire car, except for the roof, received a high-quality paint job, fortunately (or skillfully) done without any period-typical filler spray in the prep work. The seam from the roof can be seen in one of the photos. The chrome is in good condition, and the owner has new original hubcaps and a tailpipe for the exhaust system, which are included. 'I don’t dare to install them; the risk of someone taking them if the car is left unattended is too great,' says the owner.

  • General condition:

History, provenance, and condition. And excellent documentation. Service book and driving logs to delve into. A well-used and equally well-cared-for car that has always been stored in a garage at home when not in use. We hope to share more about the adventures this car has experienced later. A small part can be read below under 'Owner's Comments.'

Owner's comment

"The car was picked up just in time for Midsummer, with 37 kilometers on the odometer. Jöhnckes didn't have any transport from Gothenburg, so it had to be driven to Linköping, and it ran with temporary plates for several weeks. In the summer of 1969, a curious trip to Russia was undertaken, which was interesting in many ways. We traveled to Moscow, Kursk, and Kiev. We were under surveillance the entire time. They wanted to bring the car into a garage, but we refused. At one point, the Russians punctured the gas tank while it was parked; they couldn't access the drain plug because of the rustproofing. We screwed in a metal screw, sealed it, and filled it up again. In Lviv, Ukraine, the Russians faked road signs that led to an airbase, trying to stop us under the pretense of spying. There are no pictures from the trip—the Russians took all the film rolls and were supposed to develop them before an interrogation. They thought the films were black and white, but they were actually slides, so they were ruined when processed using a black-and-white method. When we crossed the border at Czechoslovakia, we had to wake the border guards; it was rare for anyone to pass through from the Soviet Union. It felt like entering the West, even though we were still behind the Iron Curtain. After five years as a daily driver, it was time to switch to a larger vehicle, but I got a poor trade-in valuation, so, disappointed, I stored it in a barn. I've owned it the whole time, though other family members have used it a bit during the summers. I've never been in an accident, but the car was repainted sometime in the 1980s due to a carburetor fire (the cause was a dried-out braided fuel hose). Fortunately, a fire extinguisher was at hand, so it was only a paint job that was needed. I took the opportunity to repaint the entire car except for the roof. The engine has never been rebuilt, except for a camshaft replacement when it was new. There was a hardening defect, they said, and it was covered under warranty. It's only been serviced and had parts replaced when necessary, and now has a stainless steel exhaust system. Last year, it was used as a wedding car and has been exhibited at the local Volvo dealership on a few occasions. Nowadays, it’s rarely used—just for pleasure drives and the occasional car meet in the neighborhood, so there are plenty of miles left."
