"This is the finest 740 Turbo I have ever seen. There is absolutely nothing to fault – the car is in truly exceptional condition. Turbo+ was an original Volvo performance upgrade that increased power by approximately 20 hp."

Description

This fine Volvo was sold by Bilweb Auctions to its current owner’s collection in 2020. At the time, my colleague Peter Sundfeldt wrote the following:

“This 740 Turbo was elevated by its first owner to the status of a cherished car, without any particular intention or plan for it to become one. It was simply acquired as a leased car, driven sparingly and has never been fitted with winter wheels. The car had been standing for the previous 10 years and was then offered for sale by the owner’s estate.

The owner ran a contracting business with a fully equipped workshop and therefore carried out the car’s servicing himself – hence the lack of entries in the service book – although according to the information available, the servicing was all the more thorough.

The large Volvo’s angular 1980s styling has begun to attract collectors, and as is often the case with older everyday cars, it is usually the performance versions and low-mileage examples that are the most sought-after. This car has both of those qualities.”

When the auction ended, the car achieved a widely noted “record price” of SEK 280,000.

Since being purchased in 2020, the car has covered only 450 km. It has also been further improved with ceramic paint protection, a new exhaust system, an original-specification service including timing belt replacement, new tyres, and it has passed inspection and is approved for road use until 31 May 2028.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The car drives beautifully and everything works as it should. An original-specification service, including timing belt replacement, was carried out at 58,630 km. A new original NOS exhaust system was fitted on 18 May 2026.

  • Interior condition

An absolutely incredible original interior where everything appears virtually unused. It is almost impossible to find any signs of wear.

  • Exterior condition

The original paintwork is of the highest quality and received a ceramic coating in 2025. The bumpers, trim and badges are all in flawless condition. New Michelin Pilot Sport tyres were fitted on 1 September 2025. A car cover is also included.

  • General condition

A true top-tier Youngtimer, presented in a condition that makes it look as though it has just left the showroom in 1990. There is likely no other 740 Turbo+ on the market today in comparable condition, making this a unique opportunity to acquire a classic Swedish performance car.

Facts about the model

The Volvo 740 Turbo+ is one of the more interesting and sought-after versions of the 740 range, particularly among enthusiasts who appreciate the classic turbocharged Volvos of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The 740 Turbo was powered by Volvo’s well-known 2.3-litre, four-cylinder B230FT engine with turbocharging and fuel injection. In standard form, the engine produced around 165 hp, giving the car significantly stronger performance than the regular 740 models.

Turbo+ was a performance package that, among other things, could include increased boost pressure and raise output to around 190 hp, depending on market and specification. Combined with rear-wheel drive, this made the 740 Turbo+ an unusually entertaining car for its time.

Technical data – 740 Turbo

Engine: B230FT, inline four-cylinder
Displacement: 2,316 cc
Turbocharger: Garrett
Power: approx. 165 hp
Transmission: manual or automatic
Drive: rear-wheel drive
Body style: saloon or estate
Model year: 1990

Today, the 740 Turbo has developed a clear following among collectors. The combination of boxy 1980s styling, turbocharged performance, rear-wheel drive and Volvo’s renowned durability makes the model particularly appealing. A well-preserved, largely original example with documented history can be considerably more desirable than a modified car.
