"Proper Porsche 968 in well-functioning condition with good documentation, ready to be enjoyed by a new owner."

Description

Neat and presentable Porsche 968, originally sold in the USA and brought to Sweden as early as 1996. Written documentation of the work carried out by the first Swedish owner comes with the car. It also has a Swedish service book used by the first Swedish owner, while the current owner has instead kept receipts. The large four-cylinder engine delivers exactly the power one would expect. The Porsche 968 and its predecessors are well known for their well-balanced chassis, and this example feels every bit as tight as it should. The odometer shows 151,500 km, and two sets of keys are included. The car also comes with a set of studless Michelin Alp winter tires on original rims, as well as a model-specific car cover.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Engine, gearbox, and chassis perform well without hesitation or unusual noises. Nothing was noticed during the test drive, but according to the owner, a temperature sensor may need replacement. This was indicated by the check engine light, and the sensor is said to be a part costing around 130 SEK. The air conditioning may need 5–10 minutes before reaching full effect, but then cools well. The headlights are of the pop-up type, and the left headlight occasionally fails to retract, likely requiring some lubrication of the motor. Other electrical functions such as the radio, power windows, sunroof, exterior mirrors, and front seats were tested during the drive and were all fully operational.

  • Interior condition

Light interior with leather upholstery in good condition for its age. There are a few minor stains, including on the carpet in the luggage compartment. The upper sections of the door panels, and to some extent the dashboard, are sun-faded.

  • Exterior condition

Good condition of paint and bodywork considering the age and mileage. A small number of scratches are present, including on the hood. Some stone chips can be found on the panel around the left headlight, and the windshield also has a couple of chips, none of which have been flagged during inspection. The wide body molding at the lower right side has a somewhat poor fit.

  • General condition

Well-functioning and well-maintained 1990s Porsche with nothing but a bright future as a classic.

Facts about the model

The Porsche 968 represented the final stage of development for the brand’s four-cylinder transaxle models – a technical layout with the engine in the front and the gearbox in the rear. The story began with the Porsche 924 in 1976, followed by the evolution into the 944 during the 1980s. When the 968 was introduced as a 1992 model, Porsche claimed that 80 percent of the car was either new or extensively revised. The engine was the three-liter four-cylinder from the 944 S2, now fitted with the VarioCam system, producing 240 hp and 305 Nm.

Although the body structure clearly showed its heritage, Porsche’s design chief Harm Lagaay gave the rear a more modern look resembling the 928, and the front end also echoed the 928’s styling. While many manufacturers adopted conventional pop-up headlights, the 968’s units were inspired by those on the 928. Like its predecessor, the 944, the 968 was offered as both coupé and cabriolet. Unlike the 924 and 944, which had been built at Audi’s Neckarsulm plant, the 968 was produced at Porsche’s own factory in Zuffenhausen, Stuttgart.

Porsche’s four-cylinder front-engined models sold in large numbers during the 1980s, but the 968 was never a common car. When production ended in 1995, a total of 5,731 standard 968s had been built, according to Porsche’s official figures.
