"This car feels very fine to drive. It is quick and lively in its temperament and beautiful to look at. Only minor cosmetic blemishes can be discerned."

Description

The car was sold new in spring 1983. Several owners have used the car, but it is likely that a number of car dealers have also been registered as owners between the users. The current owner purchased the car in early summer this year and has since attended to a few minor matters. The car is in good working condition and the hood is tight and in good order. It has most likely been replaced at some point during the car's life. The car was inspected in 2025 and is completely roadworthy.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine feels fine and the car pulls well through the gears. The gearbox feels somewhat notchy, but the gears engage smoothly. This is not entirely unusual on Golfs from the 1980s. All functions are in order, except for the fan which does not work.

  • Interior condition

The interior is in fine condition, with a few exceptions. The upper sections of the door panels have some cracks, which is clearly evident from the pictures. The driver's seat backrest is repaired at the side panel. This is a wear-related damage that is very common on these contoured backrests.

  • Exterior condition

The exterior is fine, but the overall impression could likely be enhanced further with a thorough polish. There is minor surface rust damage beginning to show on one of the rear wheel arches and is visible in the wheel photograph. The soft top is fine and has likely been replaced. The tyres are from 2014 but have very good tread depth.

  • General condition

The car makes a good overall impression and is considered to offer excellent value for money.

Facts about the model

The Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet was introduced in 1979 as the successor to the Volkswagen Type 1 Cabriolet. The model was developed jointly by Volkswagen and coachbuilder Karmann, which also oversaw production in Osnabrück. The first generation was based on the Golf I and is characterised above all by its fixed rollbar between the B-pillars. The design was developed with safety in mind and served both as an attachment point for the front safety belts and as support for the side windows. In Germany, the model was nicknamed "Erdbeerkörbchen", roughly "strawberry basket" in Swedish.

Although the standard Golf I was superseded by the Golf II in 1983, the first generation Golf Cabriolet continued to be manufactured until 1993. Volkswagen chose to further develop the existing model rather than create a cabriolet based on the Golf II. Over the years it received, among other things, a modernised interior, more robust bumpers and several special versions. In total, nearly 392,000 units were produced, making the Golf I Cabriolet the world's most produced cabriolet model at the time.

The GLI was the sportier version of the Golf Cabriolet. At its introduction, it was equipped with a fuel-injected 1.6-litre engine producing 110 bhp, closely related to the engine in the Golf GTI. From 1982 it was replaced by a 1.8-litre engine producing 112 bhp. The combination of the spirited engine, the manual gearbox and the open bodywork made the GLI one of the more performance-oriented versions of the Golf I Cabriolet.
