Facts about the model
Motor journalists were invited to test drive the new SUV in May 2011 in Washington, a week before they were informed that Saab could not pay for flights and hotels. Several journalists still went, on a gamble. Perhaps because it was in the air that this could be the last Saab. The model had premiered in Los Angeles a few months earlier. A mid-sized SUV with competitors such as the Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Volvo XC60. The Swedish launch was planned for October 2011. Once they arrived in the USA, they actually got to test drive the new car. There had been rumors about various solutions for SAAB, but there in Washington, the atmosphere was understandably subdued.
The new model was manufactured in Mexico on the same line as the sister model Cadillac SRX but was partly developed by Saab's Swedish technicians. The press corps that tested the model there in May were unanimously positive and believed that the new car would both fare well against the competitors and in many ways surpass them. It was a good car and it had the Saab feeling. When the journalists came home and tried to convey their impressions, they received the sad news that everything was over for the 9-4X model. The model was built in 814 examples and today there are about 40 of them in Sweden. The original price was just over half a million. Then you got a well-equipped SUV with a V6 engine of 2.8L and 300hp. The engine was mounted longitudinally, had a six-speed automatic transmission, and automatic all-wheel drive from Haldex. 0-100 km/h was cleared in just over 8 seconds and the top speed was stated at 230 km/h. The model may not have been the most rugged for off-road driving, but it was a useful SUV for the majority of people as an SUV was used at that time. Comfort and equipment were of a high class.
Epilogue, December 19, 2011, was a black day for Swedish motor and automotive history, Saab Automobile went bankrupt. The model that was on the assembly line at that time was the new 9-5 model. GM owned the license rights, which meant that there was no further production.
The bankruptcy estate was taken over in the summer of 2012 by National Electric Vehicle Sweden, abbreviated to Nevs. However, the rights to the Saab 9-3 were included. After the factories stood still for over two years, Nevs resumed production of the 9-3 model. It was only one model series, the Saab 9-3 Aero Turbo4.
