"The Alfa runs perfectly and handles beautifully on the road; the car makes a very good impression both inside and out."

Description

The car was purchased by its current owner in 1995, who entrusted the renovation to the renowned Alfa expert Veine Johansson in Linköping. The car was taken apart and repainted, and everything mechanical was restored or replaced during the years 96 - 97. Since its completion, the car has been used sparingly during the summer months and has covered approximately 35,000 km over these 30 years. Documentation and workshop manuals accompany the car. See the detailed history under the owner's comments.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The car was completely restored in 96-97 and still runs excellently. The current owner has regularly carried out routine maintenance over the years. This engine had two weak points: the water pump bearing and the hose from the oil tank to the oil pump, which could crack. Both of these issues have been resolved with modified parts. At the time of the restoration, the power windows were not working and motors for them could not be sourced at the time. These are available for purchase today, so a new owner can get them working again.

  • Interior condition

Very fine original interior in unworn condition with few signs of use.

  • Exterior condition

The car was repainted more than 30 years ago and remains in excellent condition, with only a few minor signs of use. The chrome is also fine with no damage. Original wheels with good tires.

  • General condition

An unusual Italian that is a joy to see and hear.
The car offers great driving pleasure and loves to be exercised on winding asphalt roads.

Owner's comment

I bought the car in 1995, when it was sitting at the local Alfa Romeo workshop in Linköping, where I had brought my other Alfa in for service. The workshop was run by Veine Johansson, who was very well known among Alfa Romeo owners in Sweden and widely regarded as the country's foremost Alfa expert. He had been to Italy and received training at the Alfa Romeo factory in servicing and restoring the Montreal model. He had extensive knowledge of all aspects of the Montreal and had also restored two examples for himself. When I bought the car, I agreed with Veine Johansson that he would be responsible for the restoration. The work was carried out during the fall and winter of 1996–1997. The car was completely restored and fully disassembled into its component parts. The body was repainted and the underside of the car was rustproofed before the mechanical parts were reinstalled. All mechanical components were restored to as-new condition. All bearings and seals in the gearbox, suspension, and brake system were replaced with new ones. The engine underwent a complete rebuild, in which all bearings and seals were replaced. The cylinder liners, pistons, piston rings, valves, and valve seats were also replaced with new parts. Two known weaknesses of the Alfa Romeo Montreal: As you may know, the Montreal model has two known weaknesses. The first concerns the water pump bearing. If the seal leaks, coolant can enter the bearing and cause it to seize. The timing chains also drive the water pump, which means that if the water pump bearing seizes, the timing chain can jump over the camshaft sprocket. The result can be catastrophic engine damage. To prevent this problem, we removed the seal in the water pump bearing facing the oil circulation. This way, the bearing receives continuous lubrication from the engine's oil pressure. If the seal on the coolant side should start to leak, the bearing still cannot seize, as it is constantly lubricated by the oil pressure. The second problem is that the rubber hose between the external oil tank and the oil pump can crack, which immediately leads to a loss of oil pressure. We therefore replaced the standard rubber hose with a metal-reinforced hydraulic hose with hydraulic fittings. This solution is, of course, many times stronger and more durable. Suspension modifications: The Montreal was designed as a sporty touring car, but to be honest, the suspension was never fully developed. Many consider the original suspension too soft in relation to the powerful engine. My car is equipped with adjustable Koni shock absorbers and stiffer springs. It has also been lowered to provide significantly firmer and more precise handling. I still have the original springs, so the car can easily be returned to original specification. Interior and equipment: The interior is in original condition. There is some wear, but no tears or scratches. The floor mats, however, need to be replaced. When the restoration was carried out, no electric motors for the side windows were available, so I never had this function repaired. Such motors are now available for purchase. Odometer reading and mileage: Shortly before the restoration began, the odometer rolled over from 100,000 km to zero. Since the restoration, the car has been driven approx. 35,000 km. This can be verified through inspection documents and invoices, as well as dated documentation from the restoration work. The car's condition after the restoration: Since the restoration, the car has always run perfectly. The only things needed have been normal routine maintenance and servicing.

Facts about the model

The Alfa Romeo Montreal originated from two concept cars unveiled at Expo 67 in Montréal, Canada. Designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone, the cars attracted considerable attention with their futuristic styling. The production model debuted at the 1970 Geneva Motor Show, featuring an advanced 2.6-litre V8 engine producing approximately 200 hp, SPICA mechanical fuel injection and a five-speed ZF manual gearbox. Top speed was around 220 km/h. Its distinctive design, featuring partially covered headlights and characteristic air vents behind the doors, made the Montreal one of Alfa Romeo's most recognisable models. Production continued until 1977, with approximately 3,900 examples built. Despite its name, the Montreal was never officially sold in North America.
