Volvo 544 C App K HTP rally — 1962

Faithfully detailed and tastefully interpreted after the Tom Trana original, this car has previously been FIA Appendix K classified with a Historic Technical Passport. A fine and ambitiously executed replica representing an important piece of Volvo’s early motorsport history.

"Always nice to see a homage that’s meant to be properly used."

Description

It was registered in Sweden in November 1962 as a Volvo PV Favorit — a kind of stripped-down version of the model. The current owner found the car in 2011 as a bare shell, already in good repaired sheet metal condition with a roll cage, and thought it would make an ideal base for a project he had long been considering.

With the help of photos, documentation, advice, and certification from factory driver and Tom Trana’s teammate, Carl-Magnus Skogh, the owner, Thomas, created a usable, authentic, and competitive replica of one of Volvo’s factory rally cars — Tom Trana’s car from the early 1960s. Skogh also drove the car in the Snapphanerallyt in 2014 and signed the inside of the driver’s door on that occasion. The owner’s wife served as co-driver in the right seat, just as she has throughout their time competing together.

For obvious safety and regulatory reasons, the interior is not strictly period-correct — at the time, cars didn’t use roll cages, proper harnesses, racing seats, or foam-filled fuel tanks. However, the owner is unsure whether the equipment currently installed is still eligible for competition use or if it has aged out of certification. The car was last inspected on April 5, 2017, and the most recent Historic Technical Passport (HTP) was issued in 2017.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Lively and cheerful Sport engine with the correct 02 number. It produces a racy whine from the steel cam gears, and features a shorter 4.56 final drive ratio (originally 4.11) combined with a P1800 M41 gearbox fitted with a D-type overdrive. The overdrive is operated via a toggle switch next to the ignition key.

The engine is currently equipped with an exhaust manifold from a 142 Sport, which breathes better and more efficiently — though it is not approved for use in the Historic class. The car also features Sellholm-modified dampers based on original Bilsteins, and Appendix K-approved disc brakes according to the regulations.

  • Interior condition:

Functional and compliant according to the regulations from about ten years ago, when historic competition cars were subject to a somewhat more flexible interpretation of the safety rules once the date markings on seats, harnesses, driver suits, or helmets had expired. Otherwise, active competitors faced frequent and significant costs to keep up with changing standards and requirements. Exactly how today’s regulations apply to the car and crew is something the new owner will need to verify.

  • Exterior condition:

Nice exterior with paintwork in a color correct for both the model and its period, featuring reverse lights, auxiliary lamps with covers, proper ride height, and the roof-mounted searchlight facing backward — just as it should, to avoid stones shattering the glass. “The mud from the filming for this documentation will come with the car,” I believe I heard the owner say after we finished shooting. No special-stage rally tires are currently fitted; instead, it’s equipped with newly made vintage Continental Contact tires on original wheels.

  • General condition:

Fun replica in well-cared-for, user-friendly condition with plenty of possibilities — for enthusiastic driving with extra enjoyment, attending meets and shows, and of course, competing in rally events out in the forest.
