"Few Volvo 240s have had so few owners and been cared for as well as this example."

Description

The relatively low mileage of 175,900 km doesn’t tell the whole story, as this car has been exceptionally well cared for and stored in a heated garage. It has been owned by father and then son since new. The current 74-year-old owner’s careful driving habits are evident — the engine runs smoothly and quietly, and there are no rattles in the drivetrain. There are no signs of hard use, only traces of long-term ownership — such as a small Dymo label with tire pressures on the dashboard and the red-painted steel wheels. These details are easy to restore to full original condition.

The car comes with a full-size spare wheel in addition to the space-saver spare, and both the jack and tool kit are present in the trunk. The owner has kept a binder with complete documentation, down to notes of every refueling. A service book is included, and the most recent service was performed in July this year. However, not all services are stamped, as the owner carried out maintenance himself for several years. Two sets of keys are included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Driven sparingly each summer, this Volvo shows clear signs of careful use and regular maintenance — it starts and runs exceptionally well. All electrical functions work, and the car is inspected and approved until May 31, 2026. It’s equipped with a Blaupunkt cassette radio; at least the radio works, while the cassette function has not been tested. The manually operated sunroof opens and closes without issue.

The meticulous owner keeps a large assortment of tools and emergency equipment in the trunk. To compensate for the added weight, the Volvo has been fitted with the stiffer shock absorbers from the estate (wagon) version of the 240.

  • Interior condition:

According to the owner, only the driver’s seat has essentially been used — which is evident, as the interior is in excellent condition. There’s nothing to remark on regarding the seats, carpets, or plastic trim. The trunk has been protected with a plastic sheet, which has kept it in equally good condition.

  • Exterior condition:

The paint in color code 177 Graphite Metallic is in good condition, despite not having been polished recently. There are a few minor parking dents on one door and a small damage on the right front fender. At the bottom of that fender, there’s a rust spot that has been painted over. Rust has also appeared at the front edge of the spare wheel wells, which has been sealed with undercoating — visible from the outside. Otherwise, it’s clear that this is a car mostly used in summer and driven carefully, as seen in the photos of the underbody. The trim and bumpers are in good condition.

  • General condition:

A very well-maintained car that can easily be returned to full original condition for those who wish. It runs well as it is, and the rust on the body is limited to the spare wheel wells, making it relatively easy to repair and repaint after rust treatment.

Owner's comment

My father, who was 61 at the time, bought the car new in 1983, thinking he would need the Volvo for work. But that never happened, which is why the mileage has remained so low. I was the one who took care of the car and handled the inspections. We had studded winter tires, and it may have been driven a little during the winter in the early years. However, it has always been kept in a heated garage, and I never take it out in bad weather. Very few people have ever sat in the passenger seat, and even fewer in the back seat. We had Bilia install power steering because my father thought the car had become heavy to steer, and a tow bar was added a year or so later — though it has never towed anything heavy. When my father passed away in 1995, I inherited the car and have done the maintenance myself. I have a binder with all inspection reports and receipts from Volvo, as well as notes on every refueling I’ve made.

Facts about the model

The 1983 model year of Sweden’s best-selling car didn’t bring many real innovations at first. Instead, Volvo rearranged the model designations on the tailgate. No longer did it say 242, 244, or 245 depending on the body style — all versions were now simply called 240. Volvo also dropped the DL and GL trim levels, leaving only the more exclusive designations GLE, GLT, and Turbo in Sweden. The idea was to give customers more freedom to choose between engines, colors, upholstery, and equipment.

However, Volvo buyers didn’t appreciate this change and wanted model designations back. During the same model year, a technical update arrived for the 240 series. In the fall, the five-speed M47 gearbox had been introduced in the Volvo 360, and it now became available for the 240 as well, replacing the four-speed gearbox with overdrive in cars with the B23A engine. These cars also received the tricot plush interior that had previously been standard on the GL, along with a chrome side molding and decorative trim rings on the wheels.

Volvo gradually reversed its decision to remove model designations — the GL returned for the 1984 model year, and the DL the following year. According to Volvo’s production statistics, a total of 2,685,171 Volvo 240s were built between 1974 and 1993.
