Description
The Fiat 500 was meant to compete with cars such as the VW and eventually also with the Austin Seven and Morris Mini-Minor, the classic Mini. The current owner has had the car since 1995, and during that time, he has overseen its repainting. This is a very fine example, and it has been part of the owner’s private car collection. The odometer has been checked, and the numbers likely correspond to the car’s total mileage.

Facts about the model
In the mid-1950s, Fiat developed its successor, which had a similar setup to the 600 model introduced in 1955. It featured independent suspension, a unibody construction, and a rear-mounted engine. A couple of years later, in 1957, the smaller version, the 500, was introduced, aiming to compete with the microcars and motorcycles/scooters that were fashionable at the time. The designer behind it was Dante Giacosa.
While the 600 had a water-cooled, four-cylinder rear engine, the 500 had a two-cylinder air-cooled engine. The first cars had 13.5 horsepower and went on sale in the summer of 1957. Relatively soon after, in the fall of 1957, an upgraded version called the "Normale" was introduced, featuring things like opening side windows, a proper rear seat, and a full 15 horsepower. The original version was then called "Economica." For the 1958 model year, a "Sport" version was introduced with 21 horsepower.
Over the years, changes and updates were made, and by 1975, the era of the 500 was over (for the time being), as the Fiat 126 took over. Later on, Fiat revived the 500 concept, and the modern version, like the Mini, is still being produced today. However, it is far from the simple and robust little car it was in the late 1950s.
