"Completely renovated Amazon 123 GT — the first original car in this specification we have ever offered for sale. Finished in the unique color code 53-102, where 53 denotes Volvo’s experimental/test paint code and 102 identifies the rare Stålblå metallic color."

Description

This car was first registered on 1966-12-28. Its special launch color was supplied only to Volvo’s largest dealers to promote the introduction of the 123 GT. While most were sold in white, green, or red, an estimated 30–60 demo cars (exact numbers unknown) were painted in the unique Stålblå metallic, delivered to dealers to impress customers and display in showroom windows.

The current owner is a dedicated Volvo enthusiast with deep knowledge of the brand and a wide network of fellow collectors and enthusiasts. He had been searching for an original Stålblå Amazon for over 30 years when another collector offered him this car about 15 years ago. At some point it had been repainted brown, but traces of the original Stråblå paint were still visible in the door jams, under the boot lid, and beneath the bonnet. The car was fairly solid but required a complete renovation. Despite the high asking price, the owner knew opportunities like this are extremely rare — when would you ever find another one?

When asked how many hours and how much money went into the renovation, he laughed and said it was probably around 1,000 hours and many hundreds of thousands of kronor — better not to count, it was far too much.

The car was purchased in 2010, but the renovation work began around 2018, delayed while searching for the correct replacement parts and finding the right professionals to carry out the job. The car was stripped to bare metal and sandblasted, with rust repairs mainly in the front end and floors. The front wings and panels were replaced with original NOS Volvo parts, and the floors were partly renewed. Everything was repaired and straightened before receiving a full professional repaint by Josefsson Paint, Gånghester. All the chromework was rechromed before the car was carefully reassembled, with all new rubber seals fitted and countless additional parts renewed.

The gearbox and engine were completely renovated with new bearings, piston rings, and top-end work (carried out by Kenth Motor). The rear diff was rebuilt with new gaskets and seals, and the carburettor and electrics were rebuilt and updated with NOS relays and electrical components. The braking system, suspension, and exhaust were all renovated or replaced — in general, anything worn was either rebuilt or replaced with NOS parts.

The interior, originally in good overall condition, was carefully refreshed: the original seats were cleaned and refitted, a new headliner, door cards, and dashboard pad were installed, and the floor mats were replaced with NOS originals. The whole project was completed with the car receiving its final inspection on 2023-07-11, after which it has been lightly driven to car shows.

The owner’s final comment: the whole project took far longer than planned, but the rebuild and hunting for parts turned out to be much more fun than actually enjoying the car once it was finished. It is only being sold now to help fund a new project.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car starts instantly and has been tuned this summer, with the carburettors adjusted and the timing set by a specialist, ensuring it runs smoothly once the engine is properly warmed up. It drives stable and solid, with a nicely shifting gearbox and fully functioning overdrive.

The only note is that the rev counter works but is not perfectly accurate and could benefit from adjustment. The engine bay is beautifully presented, and it sits on nice wheels with chrome rings and newer tires.

Since the full renovation, it has been driven approximately 600 km, so a few minor adjustments may be needed over time — normal for a freshly restored car. It is inspection-exempt (inspected forever) and ready for its next owner to enjoy immediately.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is exceptionally nice and still retains its original character, without being over-restored or filled with unnecessary new parts. There are no damages, the seats are comfortable, and everything on the dashboard and all gauges works perfectly

  • Exterior condition:

The body and paintwork are exactly what you would expect from a fully renovated car — no damage, dents, marks, or scratches; it looks like new and matches the clean underbody. All chrome work and details shine beautifully with no issues. If there is anything to mention, it’s that one chrome door trim could be adjusted. According to the owner, this is an easy fix via the metal clips, but it has been left untouched to avoid the risk of damaging the paint.

  • General condition:

Both the seller and I hope the next owner will buy this car to enjoy driving and owning a true piece of Volvo history, rather than letting it end up locked away in a museum or private collection. If you don’t buy it now, it might be another 30 years before another one like this becomes available.
