"A worthy representative of the model with some cosmetic touch-ups. Ready to drive and a joy to drive."

Description

It was delivered in April 1964 to a female owner in Stockholm. She ordered the extra-fitted rearview mirrors on the front fenders, and the mirrors remain in place today. After her, the vehicle has had a total of seven owners. The previous owner shared ownership with a friend; they bought it together in 1991 and carried out restorations until the car was completed in 2020. The current owner bought it at auction in 2023. The most recent and final inspection was carried out on 2018-10-15.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Everything works and feels as it should; the engine's response, the smoothness of the gearbox, the function of the overdrive, clutch and brakes. The chassis and road manners likewise.

  • Interior condition

The interior of the car is still in excellent condition with virtually no remarks. During the restoration, the car received a completely new leather interior, sewn and fitted by a former Volvo employee who had access to the original seat templates.

The carpets, seats, headliner, dashboard, and instrumentation are all equally fine. The car is also equipped with a fully functioning Blaupunkt radio and an electric antenna.

  • Exterior condition

Older paint in very fine condition, but with three small flaws – a 7 cm scratch/paint repair on the left rear fender, a small 3 cm dent on the top of the left front fender that can easily be fixed, and a 30 cm long scratch on the right rear fender, visible in the photos. The characteristic seams on the rocker panels have been filled in.

  • General condition

Classically handsome and presentable, a solid restoration and well preserved. An interesting model year, as it was the first to be manufactured at the Lundby factory, Hisingen, Gothenburg, Sweden.

Facts about the model

One of the most beloved Swedish car models is actually a true European. When Volvo set out to build a sports car, it was to have Italian lines, and so the Italian design house Frua was given the assignment. The story of how Volvo long refused to acknowledge that it was a young Swede, Pelle Petterson, who had penned the body there is well known. Production could then have taken place in West Germany, as there was no capacity to build it in Gothenburg. But it ended up neither at Karmann nor at NSU; when the model was presented in May 1961, it was clear that the bodies would be manufactured by Pressed Steel in Scotland and final assembly would take place at Jensen in England. Step by step during the 1960s, the model then became an all-Swedish affair. From 1963, assembly was moved to Volvo's Lundby plant in Gothenburg. At that point the name was also changed from P1800 to 1800 S. During the winter of 1968-69, body production was brought home to Svenska Stålpressnings AB in Olofström. From model year 1969, the 1800 S also received the new B20 engine. The following year brought the next big news: the 1800 E dropped the twin carburetors in favor of electronic fuel injection. The new model name came simply from E as in Electronic. With the Bosch fuel injection, output increased from 118 hp SAE to 130 hp SAE. Model year 1970 also brought the new M410 gearbox, rear disc brakes, a matte black grille, headrests, new wheels, and an instrument panel with wood-grain imitation. A little too late, the 1800 model received a new body version in the fall of 1971: the 1800 ES had a shooting-brake shape with an all-glass tailgate. In the summer of 1972 the last 1800 E was built, and a year later the 1800 ES was also discontinued. In total, 47,855 examples of the P1800, 1800 S, 1800 E, and 1800 ES were built according to Volvo's statistics.
