Description

The car’s full history has been carefully documented by the previous owner and can be viewed below in a clickable PDF. It was pre- (or re-) registered in 1987 by the then-owner (a process similar to today’s origin inspection) and was assigned its current registration number (with a stylish two-row plate), but it was not officially registered for road use until October 2015 by the current owner. The most recent—and thus last—approved inspection was carried out on 2017-09-27.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Nice response and smooth running from the little two-cylinder, with the gearbox feeling good, the brakes likewise, and the chassis behaving well.

  • Interior condition:

Impeccable interior with charming details, such as a newly made instruction tag that once hung on the ignition key for a new owner. The gear lever has been shortened by a previous owner, and the intention is clear—to lower the arm movement toward the passenger and also improve driving comfort for the driver.

  • Exterior condition:

Paint in the original color and a soft top in like-new condition, along with newer diagonal tires. An exterior in exceptionally fine and presentable condition.

  • General condition:

A fine little car with a distinctly jewel-like feel and a minimalist impression both in driving experience and in exterior appearance. No one remains unmoved when encountering a “Lill-Fia”—even the 600 was marketed under that name in Sweden after the 500 Nuova had earned it as a popular nickname.

Facts about the model

The Nuova 500 was introduced in July 1957. It was intended to compete with the microcars that were popular in Europe during the 1950s. Its technical layout followed that of the larger 600 model, with a rear-mounted engine, unibody construction with suicide doors, and independent suspension all around. However, the mechanics were simpler, with an air-cooled two-cylinder engine producing 13 hp and an unsynchronized gearbox.

Sales were weaker than expected, and already by that autumn’s Turin Motor Show the 500 was updated. The original version was renamed 500 Economica and sold at a reduced price. Alongside it came the 500 Normale with better equipment, such as opening windows in the doors and a proper rear seat. Both versions received a stronger engine with 15 hp.

In 1958 the 500 Sport was introduced, featuring a slightly larger and more powerful engine. The 500 D followed in 1960, equipped with the Sport’s larger engine. In June 1965 the 500 F arrived, now with front-hinged doors. In 1968 the 500 L, or Lusso, was added to the range, featuring a revised interior with a new dashboard and larger bumpers. The final version was the 500 R, introduced in 1972. It received the larger engine from its successor, the Fiat 126, and was sold as a budget entry-level model alongside the 126 until the summer of 1975.
