"Wonderful bright orange machine that works well, an air-cooled diesel with 22 horsepower that gets the job done."

Description

This particular unit was found with a tractor collector in Skåne, where the tractor had been part of the collection for a long time. The likelihood of it being sold new in Sweden is high, as the export versions of the model sold here in the fifties were notably characterized by being orange. It has a low chassis number in the series.

Facts about the model

n the pursuit of modernizing Germany, Adolf Hitler tasked Ferdinand Porsche with building not just a people's car but also a tractor. As early as 1934, Porsche had prototypes for a "people's tractor" in the same spirit as the later "people's car". Initially, the tractor had an air-cooled gasoline engine but later came with diesel engines. In 1936, Hitler's administration ordered a proposal from Dr. Engineer Porsche's technical office for a people's tractor, which should be simple, reliable, and robust. This was part of a program that included better roads, a people's car (Beetle), and a people's tractor. In 1937, Porsche showcased his design (and secured a patent) with an air-cooled diesel engine and a special clutch, making the tractor easy to drive. However, production never started before the war.

After the war, there was a high demand for tractors. In 1948, the company Allgaier started producing tractors and after a year, they were granted the use of Porsche's patents on engines, clutch systems, and more. The first model, AP17, began production in 1950. Over time, Porsche's company became increasingly involved in the production, and in 1953/54 they changed their name to Porsche Diesel Motorenbau GmbH. The Junior was the basic model, followed later by two (AP22 and Standard), three (Super), and four-cylinder (Master) air-cooled diesel engines in larger models. Today, the Junior is the most popular due to its elegant design, weighing just 950 kg and traveling around 20-25 km per hour. This makes it ideal for leisure drives and is easily transported on trailers for longer trips to meetings and events.

By the early 1960s, the market for small tractors was becoming saturated, and in 1963, Porsche Diesel was sold to Renault tractors, ending production in Germany. However, several technical solutions persisted.

Parts are still sold for Porsche tractors, and events and meetings are organized year-round by Porsche Diesel clubs and regular Porsche clubs.

This translation provides a comprehensive account of Porsche's involvement in tractor design and production in the mid-20th century.
