Volvo 1800 S B18B — 1964

A neat and handsome Volvo 1800 S that has been in Bergslagen for decades. It runs well mechanically but could benefit from a service after a couple of years of inactivity.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts and runs smoothly in both engine and gearbox. The tachometer is inaccurate, and the cabin fan appears not to be working.

  • Interior condition:

The front seats have a patina that suits the car’s age nicely, but the upholstery shows no holes or tears. The rear seat appears to be in near-new condition. Carpets, door panels, and headliner are all in good shape. The trunk seal is dry, and the spare tire is old. A jack and tool kit are included.

  • Exterior condition:

The paintwork is in good condition and would gain even more shine from a machine polish. There is a small paint defect on the left front fender, and the right door is slightly misaligned and could likely be adjusted for a perfect fit. The chrome on the license plate light shows some bubbling, as seen in one of the photos.

  • General condition:

A 1800 S in good condition, accompanied by documents tracing its history in Bergslagen. It starts and runs well but would likely benefit from a light inspection, as it has been stationary for the past two years.

Owner's comment

“I first saw this car in the 1970s and wanted to buy it then, but it was too expensive. Many years later, it finally became mine. I’ve had the gearbox rebuilt by Svenska Volvoklubbar i Samverkan (SVIS), and I’ve personally repaired a small rust hole beneath the radiator.”

Facts about the model

“Sports car of the coupé type” — that was how Volvo described the model when the P1800 was first introduced in May 1959. At that time, photos were shown of prototypes built by the Italian coachbuilder Frua. When production began in 1961, it was said to be a car with Italian styling, but the design was in fact the work of a young Pelle Petterson. The B18 engine, equipped with twin SU carburetors, produced 96 DIN horsepower. The bodies were manufactured by Pressed Steel in Linwood, Scotland, and final assembly took place at Jensen in West Bromwich, England. Quality issues at Jensen, however, led Volvo to move production back home to the Lundby factory in April 1963. As the model became more Swedish, it also received a new name — the 1800 S. At the same time, it was fitted with Amazon-style hubcaps and its engine output was increased by 8 horsepower.

For the 1964 model year, updates included new seats, a folding rear seat, and redesigned door panels.

The Volvo 1800 S evolved into the 1800 E with electronic fuel injection for the 1970 model year, and in 1972 came the 1800 ES, featuring a shooting brake body. The final cars were built in June 1973, and according to Volvo’s records, a total of 47,855 examples of the P1800, 1800 S, 1800 E, and 1800 ES were produced.
