"Very nicely renovated Manta, hasn't needed welding as it wasn't rusty. The engine has been overhauled and runs well."

Description

The car was originally sold new on salt-free Gotland and was driven there until 2017 when the current owner bought it. The car was in need of renovation at that time and was disassembled. There was no rust, but the paint was poor, and it had some parking damage. He worked on the car until the summer of 2021 when it was completed and inspected. Since then, the Opel has only driven 55 miles and is in top condition. Since the owner finds it more enjoyable to tinker and renovate than to drive, this one is being sold as there are more projects in the garage.

Facts about the model

The magazine "Klassiker" provides the following information about the Opel Manta:

Ford had its Capri, and Opel had its Manta. Both were based on the bread-and-butter models, the Ford Escort and Opel Ascona, and both were affordable enough to attract a wide audience. The Capri was popular in England, and the Manta was the best-selling sports car in Germany for many years. The Manta B was introduced in the fall of 1975 and had distinct differences from its curvy predecessor, featuring a sharper nose and a straighter body. It shared the same wheelbase and track width as its sister car, the Ascona, but it was 15 cm longer.

Although the Manta weighed 10 kg more than the Ascona, it had the same 1.9-liter engine producing 88 hp, resulting in a slightly lower power-to-weight ratio. However, the additional cost of owning a sports coupe was relatively modest, at 2,000 SEK. Initially, the Manta was available as a two-door coupe, but by 1979, a three-door hatchback version was also introduced. At the same time, a model with a two-liter fuel-injected engine producing 105 hp was introduced. In Sweden, the base models with 1.2- or 1.3-liter engines were not available, but they had their place in the German market.

The Manta B outlasted the Ascona B by several years. In the mid-1980s, the model received a sort of rebirth when the top-of-the-line GSi version was equipped with body kits from Irmscher and Recaro seats. While the engine still produced a modest 110 hp, there were plenty of tuning parts available, and the rally successes of the Manta 400 generated a lot of interest in the salesrooms.

When the Manta B was finally discontinued in June 1988, it was relatively unique in the class of rear-wheel-drive sports coupes. By then, a total of 534,634 units had been built. In Sweden, 9,452 cars were sold, and today, there are still 1,430 of these around, but only 176 are still in use on the roads.
