Saab 9-5 ersatte den gamla Saab 9000 som Saabs största bil 1998. Chef för designutvecklingen var Einar J. Hareide.
Efter lång och trogen tjänst var det 2009 dags att pensionera Saab 9-5. Det blev en avslutningsmodell som Saab valde att kalla för Griffin. Gripen används i Saabs logotyp och är en sagofigur, egentligen ett lejon med örnhuvud som står för gudomlig kraft .

Men även en V6:a från Opel letade sig in under huven på en del tidiga bilar. Från Fiat och Isuzu hämtades dieselmotorer. Hästkrafterna som fanns tillgängliga var allt från 120 till 260. Bensin, diesel och etanolmotorer samt manuella och automatiska växellådor fanns också att välja på.
