"A genuine Beetle in its original condition that has been maintained, repaired, and received some upgrades over the years, and has also had a long period of dormancy before being made roadworthy again."

Description

The current owner took over the car from a relative and had some work done on it to make it roadworthy and pass inspection. This included a new battery, spark plugs, and a spark plug wire set. The fuel pump was repaired and received new gaskets. A new drive rod was installed for the fuel pump, along with a new fuel tank, fuel tap with gaskets, and handle. The carburetor was rebuilt and cleaned in an ultrasonic bath. New wheel cylinders were installed in the front and rear, along with new brake hoses, a new master cylinder, and front brake lines.

Complete rear lights for both the left and right sides were added, as well as fixtures for license plate lighting. There's also a charging relay and new light bulbs all around. After these repairs and upgrades, the car underwent an inspection on July 12th of this year. The car comes with a collection of original documents, spare parts, and a nice luggage rack.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

It starts easily but requires a bit of 'revving' before it warms up. During a short test drive, it felt like any other Type 1. The steering, gear shifting, and braking felt fine. Not checked on a lift, but it looks good underneath. However, a thorough inspection, as always with older cars, might reveal details that need fixing. No remarks from the vehicle inspection authority. Ebersprächer with timer setting, uncertain functionality - should be checked.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is largely in its original design. It has had a tailor-made classic Artex slipcover, probably since new. It is worn, but when it was carefully removed from the front seat cushions, the original fabric was found underneath, a bit dirty but intact and with a nice texture. This indicates that this might be the case for both front and rear seats overall. The interior ceiling is in perfect condition. Good door and body panels. Fabric mats on the sides and in the trunk are in good condition, as are the protective mats (60s-style rattan). The fabric on the sides near the rear windows and the rear window by the small extra luggage space is partially discolored and has minor fabric damage.

  • Exterior condition:

The paintwork is nice and shiny, but there are areas with slight color deviations. It's uncertain exactly what is original and what has been repainted, but overall it's in a nicely patinated condition. Glossy and the glass is in good shape. Likewise, the rims and tires are in good condition. One hubcap deviates from the shiny appearance. Newer light fixtures on the fenders.

  • General condition:

A charming, genuine Beetle that has held up well. There are things to improve and refine, but more and more people nowadays want to maintain the "used condition". Regardless, it's a pleasant car, with a nice color combination and a delightful classic.

Facts about the model

Volumes have been written about the history of the VW Type 1, from the project's start in the 1930s, how British soldiers restarted the operation after World War II, and how the first cars made their way to Sweden and Scania Vabis in 1948. So, we'll quickly move on to the early 60s, as with every model year, a number of changes were introduced. VW embraced the new decade by, for the 1960 model, removing the semaphore turn signals on the B-pillar and instead installing indicators in the rear lights, as well as white turn signals with chrome fixtures at the top of the front fenders. The seats were also slightly contoured for better comfort. For 1961, the engine power increased to 34 hp, and the speedometer then showed up to 140 km/h. There was also a new fully synchronized gearbox, as well as features like an air-driven windshield washer, curved handles on the dashboard, and more. Type 1 continued in a similar manner throughout the 60s, maintaining prominent positions in sales statistics.
