Dauphine means crown princess. Dauphine can also be a family heirloom that ended up in a museum.

"When the renovation began, few, if any, saw value in saving a 17-year-old Renault Dauphine. With hindsight, a major effort was made here for the rolling cultural heritage.

Description

Refurbished Renault Dauphine Gordini with only 2 owners within the same family. The car was bought new in January 1964 by Gottfrid Olovsson, who drove just over 90,000 km until he died in 1976. Relative Erik Ludvigsson bought the car in 1980 and began renovating it. The entire car was disassembled into parts. Together with his cousin, Erik spent 3,000 hours renovating the car. Everything from the bodywork to the mechanics was reviewed. The odometer reading of 90,710 km is correct according to the information.

In 1999, the car was acquired by Ivars Bilmuseum in Hoting and incorporated into the collection. In 2010, the car was inspected at the road test centre. It was approved without comment. Now it needs to be inspected again, then it is exempt from inspection.

The car is being sold by the museum, which is changing the exhibition and replacing some vehicles.

Regarding the pictures: When we visited, the brakes were stuck, so we got to photograph it indoors. The lighting conditions were not ideal, which means that you can get the impression that the colour shifts between different body panels. But that is not the case. It has the same colour over the entire body.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine is an 845 cc inline-four which in the Gordini version delivers 40 horsepower. It was completely renovated with everything from new linings and pistons down to the smallest bearings. The alternator and starter were refurbished. The four-speed gearbox was renovated, and a new clutch was installed. All bushings in both the front and rear carriages were replaced. New rear wheel bearing. The brakes were renovated. The brakes now need a new overhaul, as the car rolls a bit heavily. New Michelin ZX, 145 SR-15 were fitted during the renovation and seem to have stood the test of time well.

The car has not been driven for about 10 years. Since the renovation, it has only been driven 60 km.

We, therefore, recommend new fuel and cleaning of the lines together with a service before starting the car.

  • Interior condition:

Original interior with some wear. Nice front seats and door cards. The left door sides appear to have some stains. The back seat cushion has wear and a few holes, and the backrest looks fine. Good headliner. The original floor mats are missing.

  • Exterior condition:

Completely renovated bodywork. The entire undercarriage was blasted and painted. They installed new wings and replaced the sheet metal that did not fit.

The car was painted in connection with the renovation during the 1980-1990s. The paint is good for that period, but not perfect. Some marks and scratches have been added during storage since the renovation. Such as on the front left edge of the wing, at the bottom of the front hatch and on the left edge of the engine hatch. See the pictures.

The door lock on the left rear door needs adjustment, it could not be opened. There is wear on the windshield from the wiper blades. See picture. The chrome is in good condition. The left front wing is missing a trim strip. Various lists are included. See additional image.

  • General condition:

Early renovated vintage car in good condition. After fixing a few minor parts, it will be ready for a good car exhibition.

Facts about the model

The Renault Dauphine was a popular four door saloon car, that was produced by Renault from 1956 to 1968. The Renault Dauphine was conceived as a successor to the iconic 4CV. The new car was known within Renault as "Project 109". Renault's engineers spent five years developing and testing their new small car, with trial runs taking place in all conditions from the heat of Madrid to the cold and ice of the Arctic Circle. During development, the new car was referred to as the 5CV or "La machine de Flins", after the Flins factory where it was being manufactured. The car was eventually named the Dauphine, the female of version of the French throne, as it was being sold as the new Queen of the French roads. The Renault Dauphine was launched in 1956 at the Geneva Motor Show. At the time, the Renault Dauphine was a real success for Renault. Their factory in Flins produced a new Dauphine every 30 seconds at their peak, with additional production in Argentina and Brazil. The Renault Dauphine was seen as a cute new car that was both affordable and easy to manoeuvre around busy streets. However the Renault Dauphine also aroused criticism is some parts, in particular related to noise and lack of power at high speeds. The Dauphine's inclusion in the list of Time's 50 worst cars of all time reflected their lack of popularity in the USA, mainly because of the tendency to rust and the perceived flimsy construction. Overall though the Dauphine sold very well, with over 2 million Renault Dauphines sold worldwide.
