"This car truly is “The King of the Road”, with wonderful design and all the late-1950s Motorama flair. It has been lovingly cared for by a passionate Cadillac enthusiast for over 20 years and has always been kept in his dedicated Cadillac “man-cave” garage."

Description

The Cadillac Eldorado Brougham cost a staggering $13,074 when new, making it one of the most expensive cars of its time. Only 400 were built in 1957 and just 304 in 1958, and it is often said Cadillac lost around $10,000 on every car sold.

This car is number 634 and believed to be the only example built with trim code “0000”, a special-order interior with red door armrests, red carpets, and a red folding center-seat armrest.

This car was imported from Pleasanton, California to Sweden in 2003 and road registered in 2004. The first Swedish owner, a friend of the current owner, spent considerable time sorting the complex electrical system before eventually losing interest and selling the car in 2006.

Fortunately, the current owner is a dedicated Cadillac enthusiast, well known among Cadillac collectors in Sweden and the owner of several other models. When purchased, the car was already complete and very solid, with clean bodywork and chassis showing no rust or signs of previous welding or repairs.

The electrical system was fully reviewed, and the earlier Cadillac replacement coil-spring suspension was upgraded back to a modern air-ride system with self-levelling, neatly installed. The car has since been carefully maintained and regularly polished, particularly the distinctive stainless-steel roof, which requires special care.

The interior remains very clean, with original two-tone leather showing only light patina. Some details were updated earlier in the USA, including the boot carpeting and interior carpets. The original red door armrests and centre armrest were replaced with matching white leather, and the carpets changed to black. Importantly, the original red trim pieces and the earlier Cadillac spring suspension are included with the car.

The only major cosmetic work carried out during the current ownership was rechroming the rear bumper; otherwise the car remains largely as it arrived from the USA. Some key features:-

V8 365 cu in, 325 hp, Hydramatic transmission
Power brakes and power steering
Air suspension
Air conditioning with automatic headlight dimming
Electric trunk opening and closing
Fully automatic engine start system
Central locking
Stainless steel roof
Transistor radio
Digital clock
Polarized sun visors
Aluminium wheels, etc.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car starts easily with a smooth-running V8 engine. The automatic gearbox shifts well and the brakes feel solid. On the road it handles confidently with direct steering, and the air suspension provides a very comfortable ride. Overall the car is in good driving condition, fitted with good tyres and the original spare wheel in the boot. It has always been kept ready to drive and serviced by the owner.

Points to note: the oil pressure and fuel gauges are not working correctly and will likely need new senders fitted. The AC works but slowly loses gas, typically requiring a refill about once a year. The engine bay is very clean and tidy, with no signs of leaks or worn components. The car is inspection-exempt and ready for its next owner.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is tidy and well presented, featuring nice two-tone grey and white leather seats. The leather shows age-related patina but no damage. The leather on the front door cards is slightly loose, with similar lifting on the leather dashboard pad.

The headliner and carpets are in good condition, and the interior retains many nice original chrome details and fittings. There is a small leather repair around the green indicator light in the dashboard.

The electric seat works, and the central locking functions. The front electric windows operate but are slow up and down, while the rear windows work fine. The Autronic Eye headlight dimmer is not working, while the digital clock functions correctly. A newer modern radio has been fitted in the glove box and is working.

The original glove box vanity accessories—such as the magnetic tumblers, cigarette case, perfume bottle, and make-up kit—are missing; however, six non-original tumblers are included with the car. The polarized sun visors are complete and undamaged.

  • Exterior condition:

A wonderful-looking car that presents very well, with no signs of rust issues, reflected by a super clean and solid underbody (see pictures). On closer inspection there are a few small paint touch-ups and minor paint blisters highlighted in the photos, along with some paints chips around the front door edges and two very small soft dents on the driver’s door, which are hardly noticeable.

The chrome trim is bright and clean overall, with some oxidation around the rear side trim panels and a small blister on the rear number plate frame. The distinctive stainless-steel roof is in great condition, and the surrounding paintwork remains bright and well-presented.

  • General condition:

A very presentable car in well-kept technical condition. It is a car to be driven and enjoyed, not just stored away. While there is always room to invest more time to make it perfect, it has been maintained as a fun summer driver rather than a museum piece. A super rare car that is hardly ever offered for sale today.
