Description

The scooter's early history traces back to the Gothenburg area. A friend of the current owner had it in the mid-1980s after discovering it standing untouched at a gas station in Mölnlycke, east of Gothenburg. It had been sitting there for some time, as Lasse's father, who ran the Shell station, had lost interest in his Lambretta.

Pelle, the friend, bought it for 1,500 SEK—"expensive as hell," he recalls. Shortly after, he went off to military service and put the scooter away. When he needed money for a party, he sold it to a guy who merely moved it into another storage unit.

The current owner later found the Lambretta in that very storage unit when she and her partner took over everything inside. The scooter had been sitting since 1988 but started up smoothly after the usual revival procedures.

Since then, the LD has been a faithful companion at rallies, gatherings, and classic scooter scene events—both nationally and internationally—for 34 ½ years. Registration documents from before the computerized registry was introduced in 1972-73, as well as records from the current system, have been ordered. The most recent and final inspection was carried out on May 17, 2018.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Pleasant and easy to ride, with smooth and effortless hand-shifting. A 150 LD from the 1950s delivers a modest 6 hp from its 148 cm³ shaft-driven engine, but there’s no shortage of charm. It starts easily and thrives on being ridden yearly to maintain its reliability. Brake performance is reasonable for a period-correct two-wheeler in scooter format.

  • Interior condition:

Newer, high-quality saddle covers in sturdy brown vinyl, with all controls, cables, and details intact. Older scooters often have bent brake and clutch levers; on the Lambretta LD, these are made from a more brittle material and are therefore often slightly broken or worn. On this particular example, the clutch lever is slightly shortened. A new replacement lever is included among the spare parts.

  • Exterior condition:

Original paint in well-preserved and glossy patinated condition. Good chrome and rubber, with older tires that have solid tread and no cracks. With an exterior polish and a thorough wash and degreasing under the panels, the scooter would become even more presentable, both with and without its covers.

The speedometer has never worked during the current owner’s 34 years of ownership, but there are skilled people who can repair it (and possibly replace the cable) if desired.

  • General condition:

A fun, charming, and stylish Italian classic in great working condition. Stored in a warm indoor garage and given the proper care for an older two-wheeler, this is a reliable vintage companion.

Facts about the model

The LD models were marketed as Torino in Sweden, a designation not used in any other known market. The 150 LD featured a 148 cm³ single-cylinder, two-stroke engine producing 6 horsepower, paired with a three-speed manual gearbox, giving it a top speed of around 85 km/h.

Its frame design consisted of a tubular chassis with integrated body panels, like all Lambretta scooters. The model sold well in Sweden but was particularly popular in the UK and France, with the latter also producing it under license.

During the 1950s, scooters were a common mode of transport, often replacing cars, which many simply could not afford—a trend that was true in Sweden as well.
