DKW Reichklasse F8 Limousine — 1938

Same owner family since new, though with a small twist in the history involving a tricky tradesman. An interesting model from a Cold War perspective, in proper and partly untouched condition.

"Raspy sound and plenty of driving fun from the engine despite its performance, combined with a pleasant and easy-to-handle, diminutive driving experience."

"Raspy sound and plenty of driving fun from the engine despite its performance, combined with a pleasant and easy-to-handle, diminutive driving experience."

Description

It was delivered new to its first owner, the current owner’s grandfather, in July 1938. In the 1960s, grandfather Hjalmar began to suffer from dementia and no longer drove, and at one point a painter named Matson deceitfully tricked him into handing over the car for 10 kronor. The dishonest Matson later sold it to Philipssons in Helsingborg, but the fraud was uncovered by Hjalmar’s wife, and the car was returned to its rightful owner. The current owner inherited the DKW from his grandparents later in the 1960s.

It remained stored in a garage for many years, and around 2005 a light restoration was initiated. The body had no rust and the woodwork was in sound condition, but new paint and replacement of the pegamoid material were needed. The engine and brakes were overhauled, and today the car is both presentable and runs well. It was re-registered in 2013 under the then-current regulations exempting vehicles built before 1951 from inspection.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

With the fuel tap in the "on" position, the small two-cylinder, 690 cm³ two-stroke engine with 27 horsepower starts easily as the lively starter motor turns the flywheel. The engine was rebuilt at the same time as the rest of the car and has only covered about 1,000 km since. Gearbox and brakes function normally.

  • Interior condition:

  • Exterior condition:

Complete, clean, neat, and invitingly simple interior in a restored original style from the late 1950s, when the grandfather had the seats and door panels reupholstered. The dashboard and headliner appear to be in untouched original condition, featuring charmingly surface-rusted roof fittings and an old tax receipt from 1964—the same year the dishonest painter Matson tricked grandfather Hjalmar.

  • General condition:

Strong provenance with a carefully restored and thoroughly maintained condition, and a historically significant model for both the Swedish and German automotive industries.

Facts about the model

From a forward-thinking pre-war car to an outdated post-war model, the journey went from DKW to IFA behind the Iron Curtain—produced well into the 1950s, where the 1930s engine found new life in East Germany’s pride: the Trabant. Its front-wheel drive and distinctive two-stroke sound bear a strong resemblance to early Saabs, and in fact, Saab used this very engine during the development of their first car.
