Facts about the model
Over the years, the brand has had a varied history, yet despite this it has produced a large number of classic cars—many of them with distinctly sporting ambitions and character. These have included saloons and estates, but it is primarily the striking coupés, cabriolets, and pure competition cars that have captured the spotlight.
In more modern times, models such as the Bertone coupés, the GTV, and the Spider are especially memorable, all of which featured rear-wheel drive.
For the 1995 model year, however, a new generation of the GTV and Spider was introduced, now with front-wheel drive in a wedge-shaped design by Pininfarina. They were offered with a range of engines, from 1.8-litre four-cylinders up to 3.2-litre V6 units. These were lively cars with excellent handling, not least thanks to a newly developed multi-link rear suspension. The GTV was initially produced by Alfa Romeo in Milan, but from 2000 production moved to Pininfarina in Turin. Production ended in 2004, although cars were sold through to the 2006 model year.
The next generation, Brera and Spider (Type 939), was produced from 2005 to 2010 and 2006 to 2010 respectively. The design was created by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign, with Pininfarina once again responsible for the final touches on the open Spider version. In addition to front-wheel drive, the cars were also available with all-wheel drive (Torsen system). Engine options ranged from four- to six-cylinder units, along with a couple of diesel alternatives. As an interesting detail, the V6 engine had its roots in GM’s Holden division in Australia and was used in brands such as Saab and Alfa Romeo, albeit with partly bespoke engineering solutions.
In total, approximately 34,274 examples were produced, of which 21,786 were the fixed-roof Brera coupé.
