"Perhaps one of the most charming small cars ever built. This example has been restored to a high standard, with the mechanical aspects sorted and the exterior retaining an excellent finish and shine. A delightful classic that combines character, simplicity, and driving enjoyment in equal measure."

Description

As far as we have been able to trace, this car has spent the past 30 years in the Köping area of Sweden. It was restored by the previous owner, and the current owner acquired the vehicle in October 2021.

During the current ownership, the car has been driven only approximately 500 kilometers (310 miles). The restoration has held up well over the years, and most mechanical and electrical functions operate flawlessly.

The car underwent its final mandatory Swedish inspection in the summer of 2017 and is therefore exempt from future periodic inspections.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine runs smoothly and performs well, while the transmission shifts as intended. All gauges are functioning properly, and the car’s other technical features operate satisfactorily.

The vehicle is supplied with one key. The fitted tires have good tread depth remaining, although they are old and should be inspected and replaced if necessary depending on the intended use of the car.

  • Interior condition

The interior is in very good condition, with no notable damage or defects. Both the luggage compartment and engine bay present well and are in good driver-quality condition from an aesthetic standpoint.

  • Exterior condition

The body is straight and presents well, with no visible signs of rust that we have been able to detect. The paintwork has held up nicely since restoration. Glass surfaces, lighting components, and trim pieces are all in good driver-quality condition. The tires are older and should be inspected and replaced if necessary, depending on the intended use of the vehicle.

  • General condition

A very appealing and enjoyable example that makes an excellent overall impression. The attractive red exterior paired with the crisp white interior creates a classic and eye-catching color combination. Ready for the road and ready to be enjoyed immediately by its next owner.

Facts about the model

They were produced under the BMC umbrella and sold under the Austin and Morris brands, as well as the more luxurious Wolseley and Riley marques. This practice became known as “badge engineering”, as the differences between the models were largely limited to badges, grilles, and trim details.

The first Mini—affectionately known in Sweden as the “Hundkoja”—was introduced in 1959 and quickly revolutionized the automotive world thanks to its ingenious space-saving design, conceived by Alec Issigonis. His vision was to create a simple, affordable car with excellent handling characteristics, and that is precisely what the Mini became.

One person who immediately recognized the car’s potential was John Cooper, who at the time ran a highly successful Formula racing team. Cooper was already familiar with BMC engines through his racing activities and understood what the platform could achieve. Inspired by the Mini’s capabilities, he approached Issigonis with the idea of creating a higher-performance version. Issigonis, however, was initially opposed to the concept, believing the Mini should remain a practical car for everyday people rather than a competition machine.

In the end, Cooper prevailed. In 1961, a larger 997 cc version of the original 850 cc engine was introduced, increasing output from 37 hp to 57 hp. The Mini Cooper was born. In addition to its more powerful engine, the Cooper received upgraded trim, front disc brakes, and a contrasting roof color that distinguished it from standard models.

An even more performance-oriented version followed in 1963: the Mini Cooper S 1071 cc. Produced in relatively limited numbers, it featured a more powerful engine and larger, more capable disc brakes.

The year 1964 marked another significant development in the Mini story. Three new engine variants were introduced: the Cooper S 1275 cc, the Cooper S 970 cc, and a more road-focused 998 cc engine for the standard Cooper. The reason for offering such a wide range of engine sizes was to compete effectively in the various motorsport classes of the era, which were divided according to engine displacement. Racing categories existed for cars up to 850 cc, 1000 cc, 1150 cc, and 1300 cc—ensuring there was a Mini tailored to every class.
