"One of the final cars built for the 1967 model year. This is the Plus 4 variant, powered by the 2,138 cc Triumph TR4A engine. It was soon succeeded by the Plus 8, which introduced Rover’s V8 powerplant.

Beyond the wonderfully engaging sports car experience, there is always a sense of Carnaby Street, The Beatles, and the optimistic spirit of the Swinging Sixties lingering in the background. With its appealing colour combination and distinctive character, this particular car feels both welcoming and refreshingly lively to drive. Most importantly, it is a car that is used and enjoyed as intended."

Description

This particular car benefits from a fascinating and well-documented history. It was originally ordered new by Charles Kreisler, a prominent Manhattan automobile dealer who was known for importing and selling British sports cars. This Morgan formed part of his private collection. Following his passing, the collection was sold by his estate to Bob Grossman of Foreign Cars Inc. Grossman and Kreisler were friends, both active at Lime Rock Park with their own racing teams, and both highly respected dealers of imported automobiles in New York.

On 28 March 1990, Bob Grossman sold the Plus 4, which was then in near-new condition with just 13,307 miles on the odometer. Its next destination was Sweden. The import was handled by Kent Olsson of Svenljunga and Lars Rörström AB in Stockholm. On 11 June 1991, the car passed its Swedish registration inspection and was sold with 13,443 miles recorded to Göran Palm of Alingsås, who enjoyed ownership for sixteen years.

The current owner acquired the car on 6 June 2007 with 27,930 miles on the odometer. He subsequently sold it to Urban Trana of Östhammar on 12 August 2015, by which time the odometer showed 30,720 miles, but repurchased the car on 25 September 2019 when the reading stood at 31,624 miles. Mr Trana was then 80 years old and felt it was time to retire from sports car motoring.

All documentation relating to the car’s sale in the United States, together with receipts for parts purchases, inspection certificates, and other records, has been carefully preserved in a binder that accompanies the vehicle.

Between 2007 and 2010, all radiator hoses and rubber components were replaced. The radiator was fully rebuilt, the braking system comprehensively overhauled, and all front suspension joints renewed. Gas dampers, a brake reaction stay, and a Panhard rod were fitted. A new dashboard crafted from solid mahogany was installed, seat runners were added, and the wire wheels were trued with selected spokes replaced as required.

Between 2010 and 2019, electronic ignition was installed. The speedometer was rebuilt and fitted with a new cable, while a new fuel pump was also installed.

From 2019 to 2026, the car received new seat padding and fresh leather trim on the sills. New original rubber floor mats were fitted. A stainless-steel Derrington tubular exhaust manifold, together with a matching silencer and tailpipe, was installed. The radiator expansion tank was replaced. A new rocker cover from ISIS Morgan in California was fitted—one of only ten cast by Bill Fink, racing driver and Morgan specialist. A Super Sport bonnet scoop was installed and the bonnet repainted. The steering box was completely rebuilt, while the oil pressure, water temperature, fuel level, and ammeter gauges were refurbished. The SU carburettor was chemically cleaned and fully rebuilt. The braking system was converted to a dual-circuit configuration, and an alternator replaced the original charging system. The glovebox-mounted charging indicator unit can also be used to charge a mobile phone.

The car is fully inspected, road legal, and ready to be enjoyed.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine started easily and ran exceptionally well. During a short test drive, as well as while riding as a passenger along picturesque country roads, all major functions performed as they should, including the steering, clutch, gear changes, road manners, and brakes.

This is a solid, rattle-free sports car that benefits from a number of well-considered upgrades, all of which enhance usability without compromising its original character. Although the car was not inspected on a lift, everything that could be observed appeared to be in good condition and functioning properly.

  • Interior condition

The interior is in excellent condition and retains its original character, complemented by a number of tasteful period-correct upgrades. The seats provide good comfort, while the steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and instruments are all in fine working order and present very well. The door panels, carpets, and trim pieces are equally well preserved, contributing to a cabin that feels both authentic and carefully maintained.

  • Exterior condition

The car is still partially finished in its original paint, although certain panels have been repainted over the years following minor incidents. Overall, the paintwork presents very well, with an attractive gloss and a high-quality appearance.

The chrome trim, glass, mouldings, badges, and lighting components are all in similarly fine condition. Auxiliary lamps and other period details are equally well preserved. The wheels are in excellent order and fitted with period-correct Firestone tyres. The engine bay is clean, dry, and exceptionally well presented.

  • General condition

A Morgan has been a quintessential enthusiast’s car from the very beginning. For many, it represents the very essence of a traditional sports car, and the model continues to be built today with the same proud heritage and craftsmanship.

This particular example benefits from a fascinating provenance and remains in exceptionally well-cared-for condition. The Plus 4 from the final production year of the TR4A-powered generation is widely regarded as one of the most desirable variants, combining engaging driving characteristics with strong collector appeal.

Facts about the model

The Morgan Motor Company was founded by H.F.S. Morgan, who in 1910 introduced a three-wheeled vehicle featuring two wheels at the front and a single driven wheel at the rear. The company’s first four-wheeled model arrived in 1936 and was named the 4/4. Over the decades, Morgan continued to build cars in essentially the same style, giving its products an increasingly distinctive retro character as the automotive world evolved around them. Despite this continuity, a number of important developments took place along the way.

The famous three-wheelers remained in production until 1952, although they have since returned as a tribute to Morgan’s earliest creations. During the 1950s, the four-wheeled models adopted the rounded radiator grille that remains a Morgan hallmark today, replacing the earlier upright “flat-rad” design after the 1954 model year. Another significant milestone came in 1968 with the introduction of the Plus 8 and its powerful V8 engine.

Throughout the 1960s, while much of the British motor industry struggled with labour disputes, badge engineering, and various corporate difficulties under the Leyland umbrella, Morgan remained committed to traditional craftsmanship. Its cars continued to be built around the marque’s signature ash wood frame construction and hand-crafted bodywork. The company did experiment with a closed fibreglass-bodied model in 1964, but the concept proved unsuccessful and was quickly abandoned.

Instead, Morgan continued to offer its traditional range of body styles, including two- and four-seat open tourers, two-seat roadsters, and the elegant Drophead Coupé. During the 1960s, the Plus 4 received front disc brakes and adopted the Triumph TR4 engine, further enhancing its reputation as a capable sporting machine. The model’s credentials were underlined in 1962 when Morgan secured a class victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
