"A classic in nice condition."

Description

This Volvo has been owned by the same family since it was new. The car was bought by the first owner in the westernmost part of Härjedalen in 1988. He previously owned a 1969 Volvo 144. The first thing he broke on his new 240 was when he was used to putting his backpack in the trunk of his 144. And the man did the same thing in his new 240, except the trunk wasn't as deep. This caused a small dent from the inside of the trunk lid, which still remains. The car has never been driven on salted roads and has therefore been well-preserved from rust. In 2000, the man became ill and couldn't drive his car anymore, so it was mostly parked in a dry garage. The car was driven to and from the inspection up until 2012, to keep it drivable. After 2010, the man passed away and the ownership was transferred to his wife, who never used the car. The Volvo remained parked in the garage until spring 2022. Today, the estate has agreed to sell the car as it is not being used. They have made some repairs after it sat for so long, including a new timing belt, water pump, battery, as well as refurbishing the brakes and a minor oil service. The car has now passed inspection without any remarks. Older winter tires and a roof rack are included, see pictures. The Volvo has its original paint and has rust protection on the undercarriage that still looks intact. A nice and drivable car in good condition for its age.

Facts about the model

The Volvo 240, which had its roots in the 140 series, was introduced in 1974. Over the years, it underwent several changes, and when the successor, the 740, was introduced in 1984, many thought that the 240 would disappear. However, its discontinuation would be delayed until 1993.

From 1983, Volvo decided to eliminate the old model designations 242, 244, and 245, and all models were simply called the 240. In 1984, all variants with fuel injection engines - GLT, GLE, and Turbo - received a new front design with a raised hood and black grille. Additionally, all models received front fender position lights. For the 1985 model year, all models had redesigned engines to reduce internal friction. The lower friction resulted in improved fuel consumption and better cold-starting properties. The engines featured a new cast-iron block and an aluminum cylinder head.

In the beginning, the gasoline options included either the old B20 or the newer B21 engines. Later, only the B19, B21, or B23 engines were available until 1984. After that, only the larger engine, now renamed the B230, was offered. The manual transmissions in the first year were the M40 (4-speed) and M41 (4-speed with overdrive), but they were replaced by the M45 and M46 for the following year. From the 1983 model year, the M47 (5-speed) was introduced for the GL model. An optional automatic transmission was available, and for the 1975 and 1976 models, it was a 3-speed Borg-Warner BW35. It was replaced in 1977 by the 3-speed Borg-Warner BW55. From the 1980 model year, a more modern 4-speed Aisin-Warner AW71 was introduced for the GLE and GLT, and the following year, it was also available for the Turbo. However, it became standard on all models from the 1985 model year.
