"Fresh and well-preserved survivor in an everyday format, in a premium version with a tachometer, stronger fuel-injected engine, upgraded upholstery, tinted windows, a dashboard with wood veneer, and dual round headlight arrangements."

Description

The car was sold new to its first owner, the current owner and his parents, in August 1977 by the Volkswagen dealer at the cooperative car showroom, Biva-huset in Arlöv, Malmö, and was then registered in his father’s name. The Passat was cared for and used as a family car for many years, and in 2003, the current owner took over the car from his father’s estate. The photos were taken in poor lighting in a parking garage in central Malmö, hence the quality of the images. The latest approved inspection was on 2022-04-12. Below, under “Owner’s Comments,” the current owner has written a brief history and also described the current issues – which seem to sometimes resolve themselves.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car starts and runs normally, according to the owner, but just before the documentation, he tried to start it and it wouldn’t. Additionally, it has been to the workshop for the gear linkage. These minor operational issues are described under “Owner’s Comments” below, and for a reasonably mechanically skilled enthusiast, it should be an easy task to address the reliability.

  • Interior condition:

Well-maintained interior in relatively unworn condition given the mileage. The wooden bead seat covers on the front seats, which signal a southern influence, are intact and have likely protected the upholstery from wear.

  • Exterior condition:

Untouched paint in good condition, the car has been stored indoors when not in use since the fall of 1977. The left front fender has been repainted after a minor damage. Furthermore, the body appears to be rust-free, and the undercarriage looks very clean.

  • General condition:

Well-preserved survivor in an everyday format, an unusual car to save for the future.

Owner's comment

My parents and I bought the car together, but it was registered in my father’s name. It’s a GLS, which is a more luxurious version of the standard Passat. It features velour upholstery, a different style of door panels, tinted windows, faux wood trim, a tachometer, and dual round headlights. The engine has 82 hp with electronic fuel injection. The standard Passat had 60 hp. We’ve had the car since it was new, purchased at Bivahuset in Arlöv. The first few months it was kept outside, but since then, it’s been stored in a garage, so the paint is in very good condition. The left front fender was repainted after a minor collision, but the color difference is hardly noticeable. The driver’s side door lock was broken in the spring of 2016 but was repaired. It happened again in the fall of 2016, and the parts disappeared, so it couldn’t be repaired. I then installed a steering wheel lock, and there were no more break-in attempts. That’s why there’s tape over the lock to keep dirt out. I took over the car from my father’s estate in 2003 and have had it ever since. For the past 25 years, it has only been driven in good weather. Two years ago, the gears started acting up one by one as I drove from the vehicle inspection, and eventually, only third gear worked. This year, the car didn’t start, so it was taken to a workshop. When I picked it up, it ran roughly, but after 20-30 km, it started running better. The day before I was supposed to go to the vehicle inspection, the reverse gear wouldn’t engage. I planned to take it for a drive to get the engine running better. It sometimes happens when it has been sitting too long. Maybe a combination of old gasoline. It felt like a stick in a flowerpot when trying to engage reverse, no distinct position. So, this year’s inspection was canceled. It was a few days before I was going on a trip. Yesterday, before the photoshoot, the car didn’t start in the morning, but the reverse gear engaged again, as did all the other gears. After the documentation, I tried again, and the car started. It ran a bit rough, but it could be due to old gasoline or a clogged fuel injector. The gears felt like they engaged in their distinct positions again. A car with a mind of its own, like in the movie about Herbie.
