"The car has been in storage since 1989 but has been periodically started. It will require a startup service and a check of the brakes and other components before it can be used. The body and chassis are in remarkably good condition, with no significant rust issues."

Description

The current owner of the car has had it since 1981. He used it for a few summers in the 1980s and had plans to restore the car. He has acquired a new convertible top and a newly rebuilt engine, which are included in the sale (see pictures). The current engine in the car is also functional, but the owner wanted to install a new one as part of the planned restoration since the existing engine, like the rest of the car, has covered 13,990 miles.

The body and undercarriage of the car are exceptionally well-preserved. We can only observe minor surface rust in a few places (see pictures). The car has been stored in a dry garage and, with some simple measures, should be made drivable and able to pass a vehicle inspection again. The engine turns over manually, but the fuel tank is empty. Before refueling, the fuel hoses should be replaced. An oil change, brake service/inspection, and a new battery will also be required.

This car is a Mark II version from 1962, which was the final production year. Over 100,000 MGA cars were manufactured in total, but only 8,719 examples were of the Mark II model.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car appears to be in good mechanical condition. The engine turns over, the brakes are not engaged, and the handbrake functions normally. There are no signs of oil leakage underneath the car. However, the fuel tank is empty, and a battery is missing. A startup service and general inspection are needed, along with a final check-up at the vehicle inspection station. Additionally, the fuel system requires servicing as the car has not been started in the past ten years.

  • Interior condition:

The car features untouched original interior that would benefit from some cleaning and leather treatment. It is in overall good condition, just lightly soiled with some oxidation on the chrome details. A new, never-installed convertible top is included in the purchase (although the fit has not been checked).

  • Exterior condition:

The car is in great condition, with only a scrape mark on the driver's door being noted. It has received an older repaint, likely in the 1970s, changing the original bone white/light beige color to a wine red. The wine red paint would benefit from polishing and some touch-ups, but overall, the car will look nice as it is. The undercarriage is in excellent condition, with no rust in the engine bay, trunk, or under the carpets, making it a perfect car to enjoy as-is or to undertake a rolling restoration project.

  • General condition:

This unusually well-preserved and unrestored car is truly desirable. One can sense and imagine that the car is eager to hit the roads again. It should be made roadworthy with relatively minimal effort. An additional rebuilt engine and a new convertible top are included with the purchase, adding to the value of the car.

Facts about the model

MG MGA was MG's first car with modern post-war styling. Its predecessor, the MG TF, had its roots in the pre-war era and, while charming, was hopelessly outdated by the early 1950s. The MG MGA made its world premiere at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1955 and received a very positive reception. For MG, the MGA was a crucial model and it was produced from 1955 to 1962, when it was succeeded by the MGB.

In the summer of 1961, the final variant, known as the MGA Mark II, was introduced. It featured a slightly larger engine displacement, 1,622 cc instead of 1,588 cc, and increased power. Other changes included revised taillights and a lightly updated grille. This particular car is a 1962 Mark II, which was the final production year. Over 100,000 MGAs were manufactured in total, but only 8,719 examples were of the Mark II model.
