"A time capsule in a worn but charming condition."

Description

The first owner purchased the car in 1964. He was from Hofors and primarily used the car in Gästrikland, but also for visiting relatives in Uppsala, Strömsund, and Linköping. He took a few trips, including one to Funäsdalen in 1965 and Gotland in 1975. The owner kept meticulous records in driving journals during his time with the car. The workshop Bil och Buss in Hofors regularly handled servicing, diagnostics, and any necessary repairs. The car also received regular rust protection treatments. In the final years leading up to 1989, the car was used less frequently. The owner sold it to his son sometime in 1989/1990. This second owner in the Sundsvall area used the car for a few years before the current owner purchased it in 1991. The car is drivable and in good working condition but needs renovation in the floor and sills due to rust. The odometer currently shows 4821 km, but it has likely gone around a few times. The car retains much of its original paintwork. The current owner has driven the car approximately 10 000 km in total over 33 years, averaging around 30 km/year. The car was equipped with a new engine in 1977, which the owner believes is a 1600cc engine. According to the journals, various other repairs have been carried out over the years, including the replacement of fenders, repairs to the sills, replacement of brake cylinders and hoses, and installation of seat belts. The car has also received regular underbody treatments. All of this is documented in the accompanying driving journals.

Typical period accessories that come with the car include a detachable transistor radio for car rides and picnics, roof rack, headrest for the driver's seat, and a fan in the rear side window. Older studded winter tires, instruction manuals, and other small accessories are also included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine and drivetrain are in good working condition. According to the information provided, the engine was replaced with a 1600cc engine in 1977. However, the functionality of the transistor radio and Eberspächer (presumably a heater) has not been tested.

  • Interior condition:

The chairs have covering upholstery and the original fabric underneath the cover on the driver's seat looks good, see image. Repairs on the armrests on the door sides, see images. Otherwise, the interior is in used condition.

  • Exterior condition:

The seats have seat covers, and underneath the seat cover, the original fabric on the driver's seat appears to be in good condition, as seen in the picture. There are some repairs done on the armrests of the door panels, as shown in the pictures. The rest of the interior is in a used condition.

  • General condition:

A VW in a worn but honest condition. Use it as it is or embark on a rolling restoration project.

Facts about the model

When production of the new VW model (Type 3 /1500) started in August 1961, it first came as a sedan model (Notchback), followed by the wagon (Variant) in February 1962. The coupé version, TL (also known as Fastback), arrived in August 1965 – at the same time, the 1600 engine made its debut. Volkswagen's intention was for the coupé to replace the Notchback, but in several markets, the sedan was preferred, and all models continued to exist until production ceased in 1973.

The Type 3 received a facelift in 1970, with a longer front, larger bumpers, and bigger taillights. The background behind the Type 3 was that, after the success of the Type 1, Volkswagen wanted to expand their model range with a slightly larger car. The basic construction with an air-cooled boxer engine mounted in the rear was retained, but the Type 3 offered slightly more space and improved comfort. Like the Type 1, the car was built with a floor pan onto which the body was mounted, and the suspension was handled with torsion bars. The 1.5-liter engine, also found in the Type 1, underwent some modifications to reduce its height – including relocating the cooling fan. This allowed for a small luggage space on top of the engine, whereas the Type 1 only had a storage compartment behind the rear seatback. Unlike the Type 1, the engine and rear suspension were mounted on a subframe with rubber bushings to reduce vibrations and improve comfort. Two years after its debut in 1961, the S model with dual carburetors was introduced.

The Type 3, particularly the 1500 S models, became popular in rallies and later in folk racing, thanks to their reliability, good weight distribution, and durability. As a result, there are very few surviving examples today. Most of them met their fate on the racing tracks. Finding a well-preserved rally car that has survived is rare and also of historical interest.
