"This exceptionally clean and tidy car has seen extensive work during its four years of ownership, with receipts and documentation totaling well over 150,000. This includes a full engine rebuild. It starts promptly and drives well, but does have a documented oil-burning issue (see details below). The car is attractively priced, leaving plenty of room for the next owner to complete any necessary repairs."

Description

The most recent owner, who unfortunately passed away, purchased this car in June 2019. It was his dream car, and he cared for it meticulously—meaning it’s been very well-maintained, with the intention of keeping it long-term. Originally imported from the USA, it was registered in Sweden in 2014. Considerable funds have been invested in the car, and it comes with a stack of high-value receipts for all the work carried out. Mileage is 67102 miles thats approx 107,000 km.

In autumn 2022, the engine was sent to Overboostracing in Arboga, where the cylinders were rebored and fitted with new liners. This step was taken because the engine was consuming oil, and troubleshooting revealed oval cylinders, necessitating an overhaul.

The rebuilt engine was reinstalled in spring 2023, and the car has covered 3,800 kilometers (380 “Swedish mil”) since then. The engine runs smoothly, and the car remains lively; however, it continues to consume oil.

Error codes P0420 and P0420P recur, indicating “Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1),” which points to a malfunctioning right-side catalytic converter. This issue stems from the ongoing oil consumption, as it leads to excessively rich exhaust fumes that clog the catalytic converters. Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car starts easily and runs without any warning lights, but it does emit black smoke under hard acceleration. This issue appears to stem from oil leaking into the valves, which will need to be investigated and repaired. All electronic features—including the seats, windows, mirrors, roof, radio, and touch screen—work correctly. The air conditioning has not been fully tested due to the winter conditions. A new inspection is required, as the previous one expired on 2024-05-07.

  • Interior condition:

The interior features full black leather seats that are in excellent condition, aside from a small white mark on the rear seat (see photo). Overall, the interior is very clean and well-maintained, with no damage. The headliner is also clean, and there are no leaks from the roof. The car has recently been cleaned and detailed.

  • Exterior condition:

From the outside, the car makes a strong impression with no visible dents, damage, or rust on the body. The underbody is clean and tidy, and it appears a newer rear exhaust section has been installed. The paintwork is glossy, showing no flaws apart from two small paint chips on the driver’s door. The alloy wheels and tires are both in good condition, and the convertible roof is clean with no holes—only a few light rubbing marks in certain areas (see pictures).

  • General condition:

This is a very stylish and well-maintained car that needs attention to address the oil-burning issue. We have factored this into the car’s realistic valuation, leaving ample room for the next owner to fund the necessary repairs. Please see below for more detailed information regarding the issue.

Owner's comment

Troubleshooting We’ve devoted significant time to diagnosing the issue. One of the clearest indicators occurs when the engine is at normal operating temperature, and we drive at about 90 km/h (56 mph) down a long slope. We then take our foot off the accelerator and let the engine brake for about 15–20 seconds. After that, if we floor the accelerator and observe dark or black smoke, it strongly suggests that oil is entering the combustion chambers—most likely through the valve seals or valve guides. PA Bilservice in Jönköping filmed inside the engine and confirmed that oil is coming from the valves. They also inspected the crankcase ventilation system and found it to be dry, ruling that out as a cause. Our main suspicion, therefore, is faulty valve seals or valve guides. Overall, this car is a solid restoration project. If possible, please contact PA Bilservice—since they filmed inside the engine, we’d appreciate access to that footage. Phone Call with Tommy Luhr at Overboostracing in Arvika We had an in-depth discussion with Tommy, who believes our troubleshooting points toward failing valve seals. However, he notes that the car hasn’t been driven extensively, which might normally rule this out. This could suggest that the engine currently in the car isn’t the original one and may have higher mileage. That would explain both the cylinder wear and the leaking valve seals. It’s worth questioning the engine’s originality, as valve seals typically don’t fail until much later in an engine’s life. Still, given the renovation already done on this engine, it’s certainly worth investigating whether the valve seals need replacement. If that’s the case, the car will end up with a great engine in a great chassis.

Facts about the model

The second generation of the XK premiered in 2005 at the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany, featuring a design by Jaguar’s chief designer, Ian Callum. In 2007, a more powerful XKR variant was introduced, featuring a supercharged version of the engine. The standard XK has an electronically limited top speed of 254 km/h (158 mph), while the high-performance XKR can reach a limited top speed of 280 km/h (174 mph).
